🌍✈️ A trip of a lifetime, creating opportunities for the future.

Learners from Hull Training and Adult Education came together this week to celebrate their South Africa Turing Scheme journey, reflecting on the skills, confidence and friendships gained during their time overseas.

From nursery placements and cultural visits to safaris and new challenges, the trip helped learners develop employability skills, broaden their horizons and build confidence in their own abilities.

The benefits have continued long after returning home. Following the trip, learner Paula Garrido secured full-time employment in a nursery, turning a long-held ambition into reality.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Tutor Laura Green, whose dedication and coordination of the Turing Scheme programme helped create these valuable opportunities for learners, supporting them to develop new skills, gain international experience and take positive steps towards their future careers.

πŸ“£ Meet Our Learners! – Catherine McNamara, Digital Skills

Hi, I’m Catherine πŸ‘‹

A couple of years ago, if you'd asked me about computers or technology, I would have told you I was completely technophobic.

I'm 49 years old, a full-time carer, and for most of my life I've avoided technology wherever possible. I was one of the last of my friends to get a mobile phone, and whenever I got a new device, I'd always rely on friends or family to set it up for me. Technology had always felt intimidating, and my experiences with computers at school didn't help. Lessons were very different back then, the systems were slow, and I often struggled to stay focused.

My journey started when I popped into Hull Training and Adult Education to ask about courses. My son and daughter, who both have additional needs, were interested in developing their own digital skills too. My son has Asperger's and, although he can build computers, he didn't have any recognised qualifications to support his skills. My daughter has autism and was keen to learn too, so we decided it would be a great opportunity to learn together as a family.

My son, Alex, and daughter, Sophia, have now both achieved their Level 2 qualification, and I have worked my way through Entry Level 3, Level 1 and then now on to Level 2 myself.

I'll never forget walking into my first lesson. I was so nervous that I just wanted to cry. I was terrified of doing something wrong or not being able to keep up. But over time, with the support of my tutor, Mark, and the rest of the class, those fears started to disappear.

Now, technology doesn't feel scary anymore. It's no longer intimidating, and I actually look forward to coming to lessons. The progress I've made over the last two years is something I'm really proud of. Not only have I gained valuable digital skills, but I've also gained confidence in myself and my ability to learn.

The course has had a huge impact on my life. Alongside being a full-time carer, I also volunteer at a local immigration law charity. Having stronger digital skills means I can support my work much more effectively, and I'm preparing to study immigration law in the future, much of which I'll need to complete independently at home. Thanks to this course, I feel far more confident about taking on that challenge.

It's also given me reassurance for the future. You never know what life might bring, and it's important to have skills and opportunities behind you. These qualifications have opened doors that I never thought possible and given me the confidence to explore new opportunities.

If you're anything like I was and feel nervous about technology, I'd say: give it a go. Find the courage to take that first step. It might feel daunting at first, but it's worth challenging yourself. You may surprise yourself with what you can achieve.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS! 🚨

What fantastic news to receive today! πŸŽ‰

Everyone at Hull Training and Adult Education would like to say a huge congratulations to our Painting and Decorating apprentices Daisy Milner and Jazzmin Smith, who have both been shortlisted as finalists in the Painting and Decorating Association 2026 Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year Competition.

To have not one, but TWO HTAE apprentices make it through to the national final is an incredible achievement and a testament to their hard work, dedication and talent.

Both Daisy and Jazzmin are Level 3 apprentices with D&D Painters and Decorators, and have impressed the judges with their skill, precision and attention to detail in this year's competition.

We’re incredibly proud to see their efforts recognised on a national stage and can’t wait to see them represent Hull this October at the National Networking Event and Gala Dinner, where the overall winners and runners-up will be announced and invited to receive their awards.

A huge well done also goes to our Painting and Decorating team, including tutors Matt Bibby, Joe Smith and Ian Swain, as well as our employer partners D&D Painters and Decorators, for the support and encouragement they give our apprentices every day.

Congratulations Daisy and Jazzmin. We are so proud of everything you have accomplished and will be cheering you on every step of the way as you head to the final. Good luck!πŸ‘

πŸ“£ Building a future in hydraulic engineering through hands-on experience

Meet Fraser Walker, a 17-year-old Engineering Fitter (Level 3) apprentice with Armstrong Hydraulic Services Ltd, developing specialist engineering skills while working in one of Hull's key maritime industries.

"Hi πŸ‘‹ I'm Fraser. I started my apprenticeship with Armstrong Hydraulic Services Ltd in August last year.

I chose an apprenticeship because I always knew I wanted to work in engineering. I wanted to be out learning hands-on, gaining real experience on the job rather than sitting in a classroom.

A friend of a friend told me about the vacancy after seeing it advertised and said it was a great opportunity, so I went for it. It's quite a niche role and I'm really proud of myself for putting myself out there and securing the job.

I work in hydraulic engineering. We spend a lot of time out on the docks, mainly working on ships. We carry out maintenance, repairs, renewals, inspections and testing on hydraulic systems and components. Every day is different and there's always something new to learn.

We're really busy, and Hull is a great place for this type of work because of its strong maritime industry and busy docks. It's a fantastic environment to learn and develop my skills.

My employer is always supportive and backs me in the decisions I make and the work I do. The guidance, support and training I receive gives me everything I need to achieve my qualification. Everyone from both Armstrong Hydraulic Services Ltd and HTAE pushes you to be the best you can be and achieve your goals.

Looking back, I've learned so much and gained confidence in my abilities.

I'd definitely recommend an apprenticeship. It's a supportive environment and one of the biggest things I've learned about engineering is the importance of teamwork and solving problems together. Working as part of a team helps you develop not just your technical skills, but confidence too."

At HTAE, we're proud to support learners like Fraser as they build specialist industry skills, gain valuable workplace experience, and develop the confidence needed for a successful engineering career.

Congratulations to our ESOL Level 1 Writing learners, who recently celebrated the successful completion of their course alongside tutor Nadine Foxon-Munawar.

Throughout the programme, learners developed their writing skills by exploring the structure and format of formal letters, reports, and emails, building confidence and practical communication skills for work, further study, and everyday life.

The group marked their achievements with a special end-of-course celebration and the presentation of certificates, recognising all their hard work and dedication.

Well done to everyone involved. We are so proud of what you have achieved and wish you every success in your next steps! πŸ‘
