Student lecture: The civil rights movement in the American media

How did the media act as a battleground in the civil rights struggle in the US? Join cultural historian Dr Barnaby Haran from the University of Hull to discover how newspapers and magazines used photos to make protestors appear as heroes or villains. We’ll then fast-forward to today, and discuss why looking at history in this way can have serious implications for our understanding of the ways the media can weaponise images of protests.

📣 Join us for a fascinating lecture by Dr Michael Bennett (University of Sheffield) exploring how London merchants financed the Barbados sugar boom in the 1640s–50s.
Dr Bennett will examine how the political and economic uncertainty of the English Civil War influenced investment in Barbados, shaping the island’s transition to sugar production and African slavery. His talk highlights the deep transatlantic ties between England and the Caribbean and calls for greater integration of Caribbean histories into early modern British historiography.
Dr Bennett is also the lead researcher behind the Bank of England’s Slavery & the Bank exhibition (2022–24), and his current book project is the first systematic study of English merchant investment in Barbados during this period.
