Exciting New Publication from Centre DAIM, University of Hull!

We are thrilled to share our latest research paper, "EgoTokens: Egocentric 3D human reconstruction and language-guided shape editing via quantized position tokens in vision-language models," recently published in Machine Learning with Applications.

What is the challenge? Reconstructing 3D human bodies from egocentric images (like wearable cameras) is notoriously difficult due to severe environmental/self-occlusions, downward viewpoints, and scale ambiguities. Existing regression networks often struggle without high-dimensional structural guidance.

Our Solution: EgoTokens In this work, we introduce EgoTokens, a novel framework that frames egocentric SMPL-X parameter estimation as a discrete sequence-generation task using Vision-Language Models (VLMs):

Quantized Position Tokens: We quantize 122 SMPL-X body parameters into 1,000 bins, extending the VLM vocabulary.

Distance-Aware Objective: We combine standard cross-entropy with an L2 regression loss to ensure the model understands the numerical closeness of prediction bins-overcoming a major limitation of traditional VLMs.

Language-Instructed Shape Editing: We extended the EgoBody dataset from 150k to 1.3 million instruction-image-parameter samples, enabling precise semantic shape editing using text instructions without needing extra region segmentation.

Key Results:

Achieved impressive performance on the EgoBody dataset using fine-tuned InternVL2-8B (PA-MPJPE: 29.49 mm, PA-MPVPE: 28.20 mm) and Qwen2.5-VL-7B (PA-MPJPE: 33.43 mm), outperforming current specialized regression and transformer-based baselines.

Demonstrated strong zero-shot generalization from egocentric to third-person views on the EHF dataset.

Proud of our team Gulraiz Khan, Maneeha Rani, Waqas Ahmed, Kevin Pimbblet, and Kenneth Wertheim for pushing the boundaries of 3D human reconstruction and VLM capabilities!
