To mark Black History Month, UWTSD Lampeter is hosting a series of film screenings this October. Films will be screened Thursday 14, 21 and 28 October at 6pm in the Cliff Tucker Lecture Theatre.

Our first film is the 1996 documentary When We Were Kings. This focuses on Muhammad Ali's 1974 bout versus George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire (now DR Congo). It contextualises the contest in relation to the African American Civil Rights movement and the history of colonialism and postcolonialism in Africa. It also profiles the Zaire 74 festival which accompanied 'the Rumble in the Jungle,' featuring music by likes of James Brown, Miriam Makeba and BB King.

The series continues with the 2010 documentary Fire in Babylon. The film tells the story of the all-conquering West Indies cricket team in the 1970s and 1980s, featuring interviews with greats such as Sir Vivian Richards, Michael Holding and Sir Gordon Greenidge. We see what the sport meant to Caribbean society in the colonial and postcolonial eras, and how the West Indies team became an icon of pan-African identity and black pride throughout the world. The film also explore cultural links between cricket, reggae and Rastafari. In essence, the film's premise is 'it's not JUST cricket.'

The series closes with a screening of Crafting Our Indigenous Memory: Saint Vincent and the Grenadines by Island Rebel Media (http://www.islandrebelmedia.com/). The film is a 30-minute documentary which focuses on the indigenous history of SVG is being preserved through handy craft production. It will be accompanied by a 'roundtable' discussion with Alex Scott (lecturer in modern history) and Andy Bevan (lecturer in international development and global politics).

All welcome. Please make sure you bring a face covering: depending on the number of attendees, 2-metre social distance may not be possible.
