🧀A huge thank you to everyone who joined us last night for a fantastic Fireside Chat with Gill Hall of Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses.

It was wonderful to welcome so many people from across LUMS, Lancaster University and the wider business community for such an open and thought-provoking conversation.

An even bigger thank you to Gill for sharing the open and honest story of Butlers and the incredible journey that has shaped, and continues to shape, the family business.

From navigating Covid to the devastating fire that destroyed a significant part of the business, Gill spoke about the resilience, determination and family values that have helped them through the toughest of times.

One message really stood out throughout the evening: “The right thing to do is the right thing to do. You’ve got to keep going for the right reasons.”

As our host, Dr Brian Gregory, reflected, Gill is an unbelievably strong, powerful individual who continually strives for quality, a commitment that runs through everything the family business does.

An inspiring evening and a powerful reminder of what it means to lead with integrity, stay true to your values and keep going, even when the challenges seem overwhelming.

Thank you, Gill, for sharing your story and your insight with us. 👏

đź‘‘ From family cheesemaking to a royal opening.

Earlier this year, His Majesty King Charles III officially opened Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses’ new Cheese Campus, marking a significant new chapter for the family business, founded by Gill Hall’s grandparents in 1932.

The new campus brings together traditional farmhouse cheesemaking with modern technology and innovation, while continuing to protect the recipes and craft that have been passed down through generations.

During his visit, The King met three generations of the Hall family, alongside long-serving members of the Butlers team, local suppliers and businesses involved in bringing the new campus to life.

Tomorrow evening, we’re delighted to welcome Gill Hall, third-generation cheesemaker, owner of Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses and LUMS Entrepreneur in Residence, to Lancaster University Management School for a fireside chat exploring resilience, legacy and leadership.

Gill will share her experiences of family business, leadership, innovation and building for the future, offering a fascinating insight into a business that has remained rooted in its heritage while continuing to evolve.

🧀 One week to go!

Next Thursday, we’re delighted to welcome Gillian Hall, third-generation cheesemaker, owner of Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses and one of our LUMS Entrepreneurs in Residence.

Gill will join us for a fireside chat exploring resilience, legacy and leadership, drawing on her experience of leading a family business through change, challenge and growth.

Founded by Gill’s grandparents in 1932, Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses has remained rooted in family values and traditional cheese making, while continuing to innovate and look towards the future.

Gill will share insights into the realities of running a family business, including the importance of quality, protecting a family legacy, supporting your people, responding to adversity and knowing when to embrace change.

She’ll also reflect on the devastating fire that hit the business in 2023 and the journey since including the £15m investment in a new cheese campus.

It promises to be a fascinating and candid conversation about family, business, leadership and building something that can stand the test of time.

Join us as Gill shares the story of Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses, from its family roots and passion for cheese to navigating adversity, supporting people through uncertainty and continuing to evolve for the next generation.

For four generations, the Hall family has built Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses around two things: family and cheese.

From classic Lancashire recipes to specialist soft and blue cheeses, cheese is more than a product for the Hall family, it’s a passion. And their family values are the bedrock of the business.

In 2023, that legacy faced one of its greatest challenges when a devastating fire destroyed part of the dairy operation. For Gill and her team, it became a defining moment, testing leadership, resilience and the strength of those family values.

An honest conversation about family business, resilience, leadership, legacy and finding opportunity in adversity.

We’re proud to have Gill as part of our Entrepreneurs in Residence community and can’t wait to welcome her to LUMS.

On Friday, we hosted the first Cyber Leadership Forum, bringing together senior leaders, practitioners, policymakers, researchers, educators, Cyber Executive MBA participants and alumni to explore what responsible leadership looks like in an increasingly digital world.

The forum focused on Trust, Governance and Strategic Responsibility, with thoughtful discussion around cyber and digital risk, accountability, governance, culture, ethics and trust.

A huge thank you to Avril Palmer-Fye for organising such a fantastic first event and creating a space for open, cross-sector conversations about some of the complex challenges facing organisations today.

This is the beginning of an exciting new community, with future plans including practitioner communities of practice, research partnerships, cross-sector roundtables, executive education and thought leadership.

We look forward to seeing how the Cyber Leadership Forum develops and the conversations and collaborations it will generate.
