The Faculty of Science and Technology at Lancaster University The vibrant, student friendly city of Lancaster is at your doorstep.

At Lancaster University there are over 2,100 students studying Science and Technology across a broad range of subjects. Our safe and friendly campus is an exciting place to be, with everything you need on campus, including bars, sports facilities and a cinema. Our College system is a major part of the Lancaster student experience, providing social and study facilities, support and accommodation. There is easy access to the nearby Lake District and Manchester and a direct train line to London, making Lancaster an excellent base for many activities. A big congratulations to Dr Henry Moss from our Lancaster University Mathematics & Statistics, who has been awarded a prestigious £2M UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship! 🎉

The Fellowship will support Henry in developing the mathematical underpinnings of generative AI to accelerate scientific discovery, working closely with industry partners to tackle challenges in experimental design.

His ambitious programme of research will lead to scientific innovation in areas such as drug discovery and sustainable engineering, whilst also training the next generation of UK AI researchers.

Congratulations, Dr Moss, we’re looking forward to seeing the impact of this work at the intersection of mathematics and AI! 👏

📻 Some super exciting news from our Psychology Department!

Developmental Psychologist Dr Marina Bazhydai recently joined the BBC’s CBeebies Parenting Download podcast to chat all things curiosity with hosts Katie Thistleton and Guvna B, alongside comedian and Peep Show star Isy Suttie.

The episode explored how curiosity supports children’s learning and wellbeing, and why giving children the space to explore, ask questions, and discover things for themselves can help nurture their natural desire to learn. 🧠✨

Dr Bazhydai also shared insights from the Curiosity Battery Project, a research collaboration investigating how curiosity develops in children and why it matters for learning and development.

Another day, another Day in the Lab! 🔭

This time, we had the privilege of being shown around the Psychology Department by Barrie and Liam, the technicians who are (quite literally!) the minds behind the mind science! 🧠

From building a tactile simulation device from a repurposed disk drive, to a custom system that allows researchers to measure brain responses with millisecond precision, and even a rather futuristic-looking robotic hand 🤖🦾 (!), it was fascinating to see all the incredible equipment the psychology technicians help create and maintain.

Lancaster researchers have discovered a potential route to longer-lasting batteries! 🔋

Researchers from Lancaster Uni Chemistry have found that shaping high-nickel battery materials into tiny nanorods helped its crystal structure recover more effectively after repeated high-voltage charging. ⚡️

After 100 charging cycles, the nanorod materials retained around 93-95% of their capacity, compared with just 33% and 75% for two conventional materials.

The findings could help researchers develop batteries that combine high energy storage with longer-lasting performance, which could be particularly important for future electric vehicles and other energy technologies. 🚗

🐑🌳 From sheep to forests - who is shaping the future of the Welsh countryside?

New research from Lancaster Environment Centre postgraduate researcher Alex Heffron explores how carbon markets and forestry investment are reshaping rural Wales. As farmland is increasingly purchased for tree planting and carbon offsetting, the study examines the growing influence of large investment firms and the implications for land ownership and the future of Welsh farming communities.

Ultimately, the study asks a very important question: as Wales moves towards a net zero future, who gets to decide how land is used, and who stands to benefit?

A huge congratulations to Lancaster University Mathematics & Statistics's Dr Helen Barnett, who has been appointed as London Mathematical Society Outreach Lecturer for Northern England! 🎉

Over the next two years, Helen will be visiting primary schools across the region encouraging children to engage with maths in an enjoyable way, and see a future for themselves within the world of mathematics. The role focuses particularly on widening participation and helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to see maths as something accessible to all.

Congratulations, Dr Barnett, on this fantastic achievement and we wish you every success in the role!

A world warming at different speeds 🌎🌡️

New research involving Lancaster’s Honorary Professor Rebecca Killick from Lancaster University Mathematics & Statistics reveals that global warming is accelerating at different rates across different parts of the globe, with regional speed-ups emerging in distinct waves from the 1980s onwards.

Accelerated warming was particularly evident across parts of the Northern Hemisphere’s mid-latitutudes, including southeast China and the Gulf of Mexico. 🗺️

Is the green energy transition primarily a climate crisis or a cost-of-living crisis? 🌎⚡️📰

New research from Lancaster’s Dr Yingnian Tao and Dr Mark Ryan suggests the answer may depend on which newspaper you read!

Analysing more than 3,000 articles published between 2015 and 2024, the researchers found clear differences in how left- and right-leaning newspapers engage with the issue. Whilst left-leaning coverage focused more on climate and environmental degradation, right-leaning coverage placed greater emphasis on the economic costs of the transition and energy security.

Despite these differences, newspapers across the political spectrum largely shared a belief in technological solutions, with alternatives such as lifestyle change and degrowth receiving little attention.

For the latest STEMMing the Leaky Pipeline blog, we had the pleasure of speaking with Nicholas Bramah, a final-year PhD student in Lancaster Engineering.🎓

Nick’s research focuses on nuclear fuel reprocessing and finding ways to make better use of spent nuclear fuel that would otherwise be destined for disposal. Alongside discussing his work, he also spoke openly about his experiences of being autistic, the challenges he faced throughout education, and the support that helped him grow in confidence as a scientist.

It was a fascinating conversation about STEM, neurodiversity, and the importance of understanding the individual behind the label.
