Bristol Cats Study

Bristol Cats Study The Bristol Cat study is a questionnaire based study of cat health, welfare & behaviour, run by vets

The 'Bristol Cats' study is a pioneering study of cat health, welfare and behaviour run by vets, behaviourists and epidemiologists at the University of Bristol. THE AIM IS to improve knowledge of common diseases and behaviour problems of cats, for example (but not exclusively), unwanted elimination, obesity and hyperthyroidism. Findings from the study may be used by veterinary practitioners, cat breeders, owners and the cat community to improve the health and welfare of cats in the future.

Loki is the Bristol Cats June 'Cat of the Month'!🎉

Loki lives up to his name, and is forever causing mischief, he has always brought a smile to my face, despite his mischievous nature he has been the best companion I could have ever hoped for, and as he grows older he has no signs of slowing down.

Fun facts:
He loves to play with slow worms, forever carrying them around the garden, whenever I make a coffee he makes a point of nagging for some milk foam, and almost got carried off by a seagull when he was an overly curious kitten.

Bristol Cat Mabel knows a sunny Bank Holiday is the perfect time to catch up on all those gardening jobs. Her brother Monkey on the other hand thinks it's the perfect time to take a well earned rest!

Congratulations to our ‘Cat Toy Competition’ prize winner - Monty-Tom!

He has won our Spring Newsletter cat competition and will be receiving an interactive treat-dispensing cat toy for his brilliant story and adorable photo submission.

Here is his story: "When Monty-Tom was little, we used to put his collar on before he went out. He would sit by the open door patiently, waiting for his collar before he set off on his rounds. He's the most clued up and clever cat I've ever known. He understands everything I say to him and communicates mainly with his eyes, he and I can read each other's minds because we're so close. He understands facial expressions and if I give him the 'stop it' look, he will stop doing what he's doing instantly, i.e., scratching the carpet. He knows all my other cats names and all his friends' names and can recognise them even through frosted glass. He lets us know if one of his brothers wants to come in or if one of his 'outside' friends wanders into the garden, recognising everyone by sight. I know it sounds impossible but this behaviour has been consistent throughout his 14 years of life, starting from kittenhood. He's an amazing boy and truly one in a million. I feel absolutely blessed to have him in my life."

Cole is the Bristol Cats May 'Cat of the Month'!🎉😻

His owner shared with us: "Cole is 15 this year and still acts like he's only a year old. Over his years he has mastered sounding like a herd of elephants as he partakes in his daily zoomies, can still leap up the 10ft garden wall from a standstill and screams like he has never eaten a single morsal whilst you prepare his dinner, despite never missing a meal in his life. In his quiet moments he loves snuggling up with his favourite blanket and having unlimited head scritches."

If you would like to take part in an online survey with the aim of improving the diagnosis of chronic kidney disease in cats, then please scan the QR code in the attached image or follow this link: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=MH_ksn3NTkql2rGM8aQVG4Mt8o9XQmZGu6ek0eArbstUQVUxRVE2NkVDNFVQUlc4VVNGRFI2R1NaOS4u&route=shorturl

If your cat is over the age of six you can take part, any cat, any condition!

We would particularly like to encourage owners with cats that have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease to take part! The online questionnaire will take only twenty minutes of your time, and you'll be contributing to vital research into the behaviour of cats in order to improved diagnosis of this very common condition in our feline population.

Sara (a PhD student) and her supervisors Emily and Natalie thank you in advance for your time contributing to their research.
