Ever wondered about what is it really like to study on the IFY? 🤔
Let us tell you more about Andy's first experiences on the programme! To prepare for his degree next year in BSc Computer Science, Andy studies Academic Study Skills, Maths, Business and Computing modules. Academic Skills module develops skills in academic reading, writing, speaking, presentations, and referencing. The lecturer for this module is his personal tutor who will support you him through the year. In Andy's first week with us, he attended the induction week. Here, he met lots of new friends, learnt about the University of Leeds campus, facilities, clubs, societies, LUU and support services available to all IFY students! It’s a lot of information to take in but extremely valuable information! In joining the clubs and making the most of his experience, Andy has seen, done and taken part in some unforgettable events and activities! He chose to be a part of clubs and societies with like-minded people who enjoy similar interests to himself and built himself an even larger friend network including people from many different walks of life!

What happens after the IFY? 🤩
Well, Jason is now in his third year of studying BSc Banking & Finance after completing the IFY!
In his time, he studied Accounting & Finance, Economics & Marketing as well as the Academic Skills module, which, similarly to Andy, provided him with the skills and tools to succeed in his later studies. Jason highly valued the study spaces available in the libraries as well as the Math and Academic support groups that were available to him in these allocated spaces. In addition to these, Jason utilised the facilities available in the Language Zone, the Edge Gym, and the Leeds University Union to improve his skills and social opportunities.
The IFY gave Jason the foundation blocks for building a sociable, academically impressive and wholesome lifestyle here in the UK! Having further improved on his skills in the IFY, Jason is now looking towards an incredible bright and opportunistic future!

If you want to find out more about Jason and Andy's experience, you can chat to them via Unibuddy

Today we are sharing Rafaela’s experience on the IFY 🤩
Rafaela completed the IFY in 2021 and is now studying on the second year of the BEng Chemical Engineering degree.
The IFY team were always available to help us. When I arrived, I was struggling to open a bank account, and the IFY staff helped me. I really appreciated their weekly ‘virtual desk reception’. But my biggest appreciation goes to my tutor. My tutor was amazing. I can say that I have been able to adjust to my first year at uni because of her. She was so patient, and supportive.
After studying the IFY I do feel incomparably more prepared than my current peers. While they were still managing navigating Minerva, finding about Skills@Library and so on, I was focused on the next steps. Another example was one of our first assignments. We needed to reference, and only me and the other previous IFY students knew how to do it. Specifically how to avoid plagiarism (a subject we talked about many times in the IFY).
One of the reasons I chose Leeds was because of its big community of international students. Since I am part of a minority group, it was important for me to find a university that would not make me feel ‘out’.
Also, Leeds is one of the best universities in the UK for my course, and part of the Russell Group. I do not regret choosing Leeds for one second. If you want a top-class education, to live in a vibrant city, with great restaurants, (and the weather is not as bad as other cities in the UK), then come to Leeds.

One of our incredible alumni, Mohanad has given us a stunning review of his time at the University of Leeds, all starting with the International Foundation Year in 2013 🤩

During the IFY, I met lots of international students some of which are still my best friends until now. Together we did lots of fun activities as that year was everyone’s first year in the UK and in Uni. Some of the activities that we did together included, exploring Leeds, dining out together, watching movies in the VUE cinema, playing video games, going to the Edge to work out or swim and playing football. During this year, we got exposed to British culture alongside many international cultures and that by itself was an amazing experience.

After the IFY, I went to do BEng in Chemical Engineering at the University of Leeds from 2014 to 2017. The IFY as a whole gave me an idea of the education system and quality at the University of Leeds is. During my undergraduate studies, I worked with the IFY as a social assistant and as a school ambassador for the school of chemical and process engineering during school open days. After I graduated I worked for a year as a chemical engineering research assistant at the University of Leeds between July 2017 and September 2018.

In October 2018, I decided to undertake MSc and Ph.D. in Complex Particulate Products and Processes. During these years I have worked as a teaching assistant alongside my studies. I help module leaders in teaching their subjects to students by helping the students understand new chemical engineering concepts in tutorials or during lab demonstrations. Moreover, I also worked and still working with the skills at library as a maths support tutor. In this role, we provide support for all taught students at the university of Leeds who need support with mathematics and statistics.

Although it did not finish yet, my overall journey at the University of Leeds helped me grow and develop both on personal and professional levels. The skills that I have gained in more than nine years at the University of Leeds will definitely help me achieve more in Life
