As the England Women Rugby League team prepare to kick off their 2026 World Cup campaign on Saturday morning, a Leeds Trinity alumnus is already busy helping to shape the next generation of players hoping to represent their country at future tournaments 🏉

Conor Meese is now the Diploma in Sporting Excellence Manager at the Rugby Football League, and his role includes leading England Rugby League’s Female Pathway Programme for players aged 14–18. He reports to Stuart Barrow, the Head Coach of the England Women first team and RFL Head of Female Pathways, ensuring his work aligns closely with the needs and aspirations of the women’s senior team.

Children might not receive the adequate preparation for complex future challenges, if a continuous lack of funding of science education research continues to affect schools and teachers across the country.

The warning comes in a recent report co-authored by Leeds Trinity University's Professor Leigh Hoath and Sheffield Hallam University's Dr Stuart Bevins, which calls on the Department for Education to recognise science education research as a strategic priority.

Without sustainable funding, schools will lack the up-to-date knowledge base needed to teach children how to deal with climate change, public health crises, or technological developments, which are affecting our rapidly changing world.

With women currently accounting for just 26% of the UK's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce, Leigh Hoath, Professor of Science Education at Leeds Trinity University and BASF, a key supplier of products and solutions across UK industries, have been running a flagship programme to encourage girls and young women to consider careers in STEM 🙌

Initially aimed at primary school children, the programme has now expanded to secondary age, having recently welcomed 11 girls and young women from Bradford Forster Academy to the BASF manufacturing site in Bradford, where they took part in interactive experiments and activities while meeting scientists, engineers, and manufacturing professionals.

Student co-creation is at the heart of our teaching excellence and mission to ensure everyone can thrive at university, regardless of their background. Our academics implement this in their practice in diverse ways.

Dr Chris Dlamini, Senior Lecturer in Health and Social Care, is committed to ensuring students feel comfortable to express their knowledge, beliefs, and opinions in the classroom, as active contributors to their learning.

This is a key element to decolonising the curriculum, as students from diverse backgrounds may feel like their knowledge is treated as invisible, compared to Western or Eurocentric beliefs.

To mark Black History Month, Dr Dlamini explains how his classroom practice ensures all students feel included, and why this is a key tool to understand and fight against racism.

Leeds Trinity University's School of Computing and Creative Industries has secured a grant from the Royal Academy of Engineering to welcome a Visiting Professor to contribute to teaching excellence and enhance student skills 🙌

Leeds Trinity's Computer Science provision is ranked 2nd in Yorkshire and 13th in the UK by the Guardian University Guide 2027, as well as 1st for Student Satisfaction in Yorkshire and the Humber by the Complete University Guide 2027, recognising its career-led teaching, where key tech employers are involved at every stage of the course, from curriculum design to placement opportunities.

Earlier this month, the University welcomed David Lannin, a highly experienced cyber security expert, who will contribute his expertise to the Computer Science curriculum, and deliver lectures, workshops, mentoring, and industry engagement activities to students.
