UoL PG Talks A platform for postgraduate students from across the University of Leeds to present their research to other researchers

The University of Leeds Postgraduate Public Engagement Talks Series is a monthly series of talks to allow postgraduate students to share their research research with others from across the university. Every month we will have three speakers from a range of schools and faculties each giving a 15 minute talk about their work, followed by a "networking" session at one of the union bars. This will pro

vide you with a great opportunity to engage with a wide variety of subjects, in an informal and entertaining way, that you might not otherwise have the opportunity to do. As well as introducing you to other students from all over the university. We are always looking for people who are willing to present their work to a non-specialist audience. It will be a great way to practice public speaking in an informal setting and will also look good on your CV as a public engagement task. Our first featured image is an astonishing visualisation of a cell, captured here at the University of Leeds, infected with the Chikungunya virus. The virus is able to change the behaviour of infected cells, and powerful imaging techniques enable us to visualise this to better understand how the virus causes disease. Roland Remenyi will be presenting what will certainly be a visually stunning presentation!

Polly Galis will be discussing the distinction between po*******hy and erotica in literature and how the boundary between anti-porn and sex-positive feminism becomes blurred. How three authors bridge this disctinction of porno-erotic technique allows for a more nuanced representation of female sexuality than those in mainstream po*******hy.

Our next event is on the 3rd August, and our first featured image comes from Hope Williard from the School of History, discussing the Dark Age Facebook. Hope researches the period after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, in the area of modern-day Belgium, France, the Rhineland and Switzerland, and how the model of friendship evolved. In our final featured image for next week's talks, we have the financial center of the UK. Corporate fraud reporting has long been a complex issue, however, UK media outlets have been employing techniques known as neutralisation - a common rationalisation in criminology - in their reporting of such events. This technique can skew the public's perception of events.

In our second featured image we have an inter-war advertisement for electrical goods. The development of the national grid is a vital component of national security. The influence of media in the uptake of electrical goods was vital to convince the public that electricity was both desirable and beneficial, whilst also being safe to use.

In our first featured image, we have the visualisation of components of the Hepatitis C virus within a human cell. Hepatitis C infects ~170 Million people globally, and is the leading cause cause of liver transplantation worldwide. It is therefore vital to understand this disease in order to combat it. Visualising it within human cells allows us to better understand this disease and therefore combat it.

Through advances in microscopy, we are able to view these components at incredible resolution. These advances are enabling better understanding of cellular processes, and are contributing to a 'Resolution Revolution'.

Our University wide talks series has so far had two really interesting and diverse sets of talks but we are always looking for new people to present, especially if you are in Law, Business, or Engineering.
