Leeds University Union Music Society (LUUMS)

Leeds University Union Music Society (LUUMS) One of LUU’s biggest societies, with 11 ensembles and over 300 members. Come along and join us! Visit luums.org for more info!

LUUMS is one of the largest performance societies in the Leeds University Union. The society puts on around 25 performances a year, with regular socials and education events. Our ensembles are:

Introducing LUUMS Symphony Orchestra!

Symphony Orchestra (‘Symph’) is LUUMS’ auditioned Symphony Orchestra!

With 3 concerts per year, plus the annual tour alongside SWO and Strings, Symph tackles some challenging and rewarding repertoire, having played Holst’s The Planets Suite and both of De Falla’s Three Cornered Hat Suite’s in recent years!

Symph rehearse every Thursday from 7:30-9:30 in the Clothworker’s Centenary Concert Hall, and rehearsals are followed by a post rehearsal pub trip, as well as a variety of socials throughout the year!

Introducing LUUMS Brass Band!

Brass Band are an unauditioned ensemble in LUUMS that rehearse every Tuesday 5-7:15, and welcomes brass and percussion players of any level and experience!

The band takes parts in 3 LUUMS concerts each year, but also performs in two big brass band events- TriUni and Unibrass, as well as carolling in the winter season to raise funds and host regular socials! Rehearsals are always followed by a trip to Old Bar, as well!

Introducing LUUMS Symphonic Wind Orchestra!

Symphonic Wind Orchestra (‘SWO’) is LUUMS’ auditioned Wind Band and provides rewarding performance opportunities for the finest woodwind, brass and percussion players for across all Leeds universities.

Known for tackling challenging repertoire, SWO has played wide variety of pieces from across all genres, including Leonard Bernstein’s Slava, Samuel Hazo’s Arabesque and James Barnes’ Symphonic Overture!

Outside of rehearsals (7:30-9:30 every Wednesday!) there are several socials (SWO-cials) throughout the year from bowling to mini golf, and, of course, the weekly post- rehearsal old bar trip!

In the summer, SWO, alongside Symph and Strings, go on the annual LUUMS tour, going to places such as Edinburgh, Germany and The Netherlands!

Introducing LUUMS Chamber Choir!

Chamber Choir is the auditioned choir within LUUMS, consisting of 16-20 singers, who all share a passion for choral music, and enjoy performing a range of music from early renaissance polyphony to contemporary music by living composers.

The choir performs in 3 LUUMS Concerts per year, and also takes part on a European Tour, with previous destinations including Dublin, Krakow and Prague!

Rehearsals are Tuesdays 19:30-21:30 in the school of music, followed by a trip to the pub!

LUUMS Percussion Ensemble is an unauditioned ensemble open to players of all levels- from season players to complete beginners!

Known for incorporating many different genres into their concerts, from Radiohead arrangements to jazz improvisation, there’s something for everyone!

Percussion Ensemble rehearse every Wednesday afternoon, and can’t wait to see you there!

Introducing LUUMS Symphonic Choir!

Symphonic Choir is an unauditioned choir open to all singers of any and all abilities!

Symphonic Choir focuses on sacred and secular works for SATB, and over the last year has performed works from Hansel’s Messiah, Eric Whitacre’s The Seal Lullaby and collaborated with LUUMS Symphonic Wind Orchestra!

Whether you are classically trained, or have never sung before, Symphonic Choir is open to everyone- they rehearse 5-7 every Thursday, and often go to old bar after rehearsal as a weekly social!

Introducing LUUMS Concert Band!

Concert Band is LUUMS’ unauditioned Wind Band, open to all woodwind, brass and percussion players of all levels from across all Leeds Universities.

Rehearsing 5:15-7:15 every Friday, they play a wide variety of music, from modern wind band classics such as Loch Lomond by Frank Ticheli to musical theatre favourite such as medleys from Hairspray and The Lion King!

Introducing LUUMS String Orchestra!

String Orchestra (‘Strings’) is LUUMS’ auditioned strings ensemble, and tackles a variety of challenging music throughout the year, with past performances showcasing Frederick Delius’ Two Aquarelles and Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosen!

Strings rehearsals take place every Wednesday from 5-7, and there is a variety of socials held throughout the year as well as a tour abroad, held along with SWO and Symph!
