🧠 March is Brain Tumour Awareness Month 🧠

This month, we stand in support of everyone affected by brain tumours - patients, families, carers, and healthcare professionals.

Brain tumours can impact anyone at any age, and symptoms are often complex and non-specific, making awareness and early recognition vital. As future pharmacists and healthcare leaders, we play an important role in recognising red flag symptoms, supporting patients through treatment, and promoting safe, evidence-based care.

We also acknowledge the vital work of organisations such as Brain Tumour Research and The Brain Tumour Charity, who continue to fund research, provide support services, and campaign for improved outcomes.

Together, we can raise awareness, encourage conversations, and support ongoing research to improve diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life.

It’s National Influenza Vaccination Week - a key reminder of the importance of getting protected against flu, especially for vulnerable groups, healthcare professionals, and those in close-contact environments. Annual vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce severe illness, protect communities, and ease pressure on healthcare services.

At the Leicester School of Pharmacy, we’re not only raising awareness, we’re actively contributing.

This year, more than 300 DMU staff members received their seasonal flu vaccination in the Hawthorn Building, while our third-year MPharm students gained hands-on experience delivering flu jabs and carrying out pre-screening assessments. Supported by academic staff, DMU’s Wellbeing Team, and recent graduate Sana Dabhad, students developed confidence and clinical competence in real consultation-room settings.

One student described their first vaccination experience as “like crossing the road” with supportive guidance, capturing the blend of reassurance, teamwork, and professional growth that defined the day.

As we highlight the importance of flu protection this week, we also celebrate the commitment, skill, and compassion of our future pharmacists who are already making an impact.

🌍 World AIDS Day - 1 December

Today, we stand with the global community to mark World AIDS Day, honouring those affected by AIDS and raising awareness around HIV.

This day reminds us of the importance of understanding:
✔ How HIV is transmitted
✔ How it can be prevented
✔ What it means to live with HIV today

With accurate knowledge, we can protect our health, support others, and help challenge stigma with compassion and respect.

World AIDS Day is also the focus of the year-round Global AIDS Campaign - a chance to learn, reflect, fundraise, and show support for people living with HIV, including through organisations like the National AIDS Trust (NAT).

🔎 A brief background
HIV was first identified in 1981, and the term AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) was introduced in 1982 to describe the condition caused by severe immune system damage.

🎗️ Show your support
Wearing a red ribbon remains the universal symbol of HIV awareness and solidarity.

At the Leicester School of Pharmacy, we continue to champion health education, research, and compassionate care for all communities affected by HIV.

❤️ Together, let’s raise awareness, challenge stigma, and stand with those living with HIV.

💜 November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month 2025 💜

This month, we raise awareness for pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest and least understood cancers. Early detection saves lives – knowing the risk factors and symptoms is key.

Let’s honour those affected, support ongoing research, and spread hope for a cure.

🩺 National Diabetes Month 2025

This November, we’re recognising National Diabetes Month - a moment to raise awareness, support our communities, and highlight the importance of education and compassionate care.

At the Leicester School of Pharmacy, our students and staff continue to contribute to better diabetes care through teaching, research, and clinical partnerships, helping to empower individuals in managing their health.

This month reminds us to:
✨ encourage early detection
✨ support those living with diabetes
✨ promote understanding and confidence in self-care
✨ champion collaborative work that improves care

Together, we can help create a future where everyone feels informed and supported. 💙

On , we are highlighting the wellbeing of men in our profession.

In the 2024 workforce wellbeing survey:
85 percent of male respondents were at risk of burnout
Only 35 percent rated their mental health as good or very good.

Pharmacy study and practice can be demanding, and it is important to remember you do not have to cope with stress alone.

At Leicester School of Pharmacy, students and staff can access support through DMU’s Mental Health Team. They offer advice, practical adjustments, signposting to counselling, and help with local services.
Email [email protected] or book a SPA appointment on MyGateway to reach out.

For wider support, Pharmacist Support provides free and confidential wellbeing resources for the whole pharmacy community.
