Did you know we have a discord server?

This is where we organise, advertise and plan most of our events! You can also chat to other members of the society, so your first meetup can be a little less stressful.

The link is on the De Montfort Student Union page, linked in our bio!

Hello everyone!

The DMU SU elections are happening right now, and we are getting towards the end of the nominations period where you can stand for positions.

We still have several positions without anyone in the nominations. If we do not have at least one person stand for each of the core roles, then we cannot run as a society through 2021/2022.

I cannot stress enough how important this is, as it would mean DMU would potentially be without an LGBTQ+ society for the year, and we would be unable to provide the support and events to you all.

The positions for committee are:
- Chairperson & Co-chairperson
- Treasurer
- Health & Safety Officer
- Social Media Officer
- Secretary

And the link to the elections page is here:

The Activities Team has put together a PowerPoint with all the relevant information about running in the Student Group Elections and Bye Elections.

A reminder to all members that our society by-elections are happening, and we are looking for a Chairperson and Secretary to join the already elected committee for next academic year, vital roles that need to be filled for the society to run officially through DSU.

Nominations close on Sunday night, to run, you need to click 'stand' at the top, then select the role you wish to run for and hit 'stand' next to that. Manifesto's are optional though recommended, and you do need to be a paid member to be able to run through the website.

Any questions just ask, or see the pinned post at the top of this page :)

The by-elections to be part of the society committee are now live, until 23:59 on the 12th July (under 10 days!)

We are looking for the two remaining core roles to be filled at this time, which are necessary for the society to run through the De Montfort Students Union. We MUST fill these roles, so if you are interested in being part the society in the next academic year, please strongly consider nominating yourselves for one of these roles as soon as possible, as without these positions, it will be incredibly difficult for the newly appointed committee to maintain the society.

Chairperson - The person who will oversee and manage the committee roles, and general direction of the society. Hosts monthly committee meetings to plan the societies activities. Communicates with society contacts (such as the DSU, LGBTQ+ Charities and nightlife venues). Although an involved role, incredibly rewarding. Will work alongside the elected co-chairperson, and help/guidance will always be available from myself.

Secretary (Nights Out) - Traditionally for the society, the person who manages the social side of our activities - creating, planning and running night out events, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. By default, also the general admin to the society, though these tasks have been historically split as seen fit across the various committee members.

Did I mention all DMU committee members get to put their worked hours down as volunteer hours, which are accredited through the universities HEAR reports you receive at the end of study? - They look great on your CV's!

Roles can be seen here - www.demontfortsu.com/elections/posts/455/

To see the roles available, you MUST be a currently paid member of the society (only £2 if you are not), and the DSU only allow nominees to run for one role per society.

IMPORTANT LGBTQ+ ELECTION NEWS. Please read entire post if you would like to run for committee next year. (DEADLINE TODAY)
-----

Elections for next years committee (2020/21) are now live.

For next year we are looking for a full team to re-energise the LGBTQ+ Society. Being part of a society committee is not only a great experience and opportunity, but it also goes towards volunteering hours that will be recognised and accredited by DMU, so you can use it on your CV’s!

ROLES

Next year we are looking to fill the following roles. (Note roles with * are mandatory for the society to run so please possibly consider these as a priority. Unfilled roles however will have follow up by-elections.)
- *Chairperson
- Co-Chairperson
- *Health and Safety (Awareness Vice Chair)
- Gender Awareness Officer
- Sexuality Awareness Officer
- *Secretary (Nights Out Vice Chair)
- *Treasurer
- Social Media Officer

RESPONSIBILITIES

As seen on the attached images, the individual roles have their own endeavours and activities, however all committee members share common roles and responsibilities.

• Being on the society and committee is more than just being part of a close-knit social group, but is also serious role, so a level of professional responsibility must be used when dealing with issues that may arise, regardless of issues within the committee, society or wider community.
• Everyone is expected to attend a monthly committee meeting to plan out everything to do with the society. These are vital to the committee, so you must make best efforts to attend these, especially for the first meeting of the year, and in the run-up to major events such as DMUpride.
• A mandatory training conference is also held at the end of the academic year and the beginning, which all members must attend (either one is usually fine). These are to train and develop your skills that will be used in the committee. (With recent events it is difficult to say how or when this will actually run).
• All committee must be actively logged in and using society social and email accounts on a daily basis, as to provide members with a quick point of contact.
• Finally, as with above, a Committee only Facebook chat will be vital backbone to communicating with the rest of the committee, and you will be expected to be an active part of this chat for the entire term of being a committee member.

IMPORTANT DATES

• Nominations close on Friday 3th April at 23:59.
• Voting opens on Wednesday 15th April at 12:00.
• Voting closes on Friday 24th April at 23:59.
• Results will released on week of 4th May.

HOW TO APPLY

1) You need to be logged in to the DSU site, and be a paid member of the LGBTQ+ society.
2) Once you have done that, follow the following link and scroll down to 'post list'. https://www.demontfortsu.com/activities/hq/policies/elections/
3) Any available role for all societies you are a part of (paid member) will be listed there.
4) At the top of the page, click ‘stand’, and fill in the details to agree with the Terms and Conditions.
5) To stand for a role, hit the 'stand' tab, and then click the 'stand' action against the role you wish to run for. You can only stand for one role per student group (DSU rules).
6) After that, there will be an option unlocked next to the role to attach a photo and a manifesto, should you wish to (its recommended!).

APPLICATION TIPS

You only have a 300 word limit so try to be to-the-point.
Talk about what you want to bring to the society, and perhaps break this down further into a small handful of short and sweet ‘pledges’, that you intend to carry out as a member of the committee.

Having a photo is optional, however is recommended as it helps people put a face to the name who they are considering voting for.

CLOSING NOTE
Applications close FRIDAY, 3rd APRIL, at 23:59.
The polls for voting on nominations open at 12:00 on Wednesday 15th April.

If you have any further queries regarding any of the roles or responsibilities, please message one of the committee most appropriate to the role, and they should be able to give you some advice.

Thankyou for taking your time to read this, and I hope that you consider running as part of the committee next year.

Chris – DMU LGBTQ+ Society Chairperson
