Clare Hall, University of Leicester

Clare Hall, University of Leicester Calling all past students who lived at Clare Hall to get in touch and post your memories and photos of your time at Leicester! Where on earth does the time go?

I recently met up with Paul Cook for a catch up after far too long and we realised it’s nearly 35 years since we first went to Leicester and ended up sharing a corridor on the first floor in B Block. After a couple of beers and many laughs we started reminiscing about everyone we had met at Clare Hall and how it was one of the most memorable times in our lives. We discovered that both of us were i

n touch with a few people from the old place but there were many more good friends we’d sadly lost touch with over the years. Since our time though we’ve moved on from sharing a telephone on the landing and writing letters to all the new social media outlets so we knew this was a situation we could now easily resolve. So for the first time we now have a dedicated page which is for anyone who lived at Clare Hall at any time to get in touch. We’re starting by inviting all the ex-Clare inmates we know to ‘like’ our page and if they then invite everyone they know, we’ll hopefully in time get enough ‘likes’ to fill the JCR (it does still exist – just!)

Please post your thoughts, memories, funny stories, memorable moments, anything really as long as it’s faintly Leicester related. I’m sure this will generate some fantastic conversations and if you have some old photos gathering dust in the attic, please do share them too as these could be very entertaining. In turn I’ll post the occasional update to try and take you back in time. Don’t forget to let us know when you were at Clare and it would be great to hear what you’re up to now. You never know if there’s sufficient demand, we might even dust off the Odyssey Disco for a reunion party! Right I’m off to see the Bursar about last night’s dinner…

This is incredibly sad - also consultations over the Chemistry and Geography, Geology and Environment courses are still ongoing with decisions over their futures set to come in the middle of May.

Something's gone wrong and we've got some technical issues at our end. Please take a look at on Twitter for the most up-to-date information from us.

On 27 May 1997, the University of Leicester welcomed two icons for the opening of the Richard Attenborough Centre for the Arts and Disabled People, now known as the Attenborough Arts Centre.

Arriving by helicopter, this moment marked the beginning of a space dedicated to accessibility and creativity - a vision championed by Richard Attenborough himself.

The Attenborough Arts Centre continues to stand as a testament to inclusion and the transformative power of the arts.

There’s a photo in the article taken in 1977 which is exactly as I remember it.

A painting of Claudio Ranieri was attached to the wall of Brucciani's building, in 2016, to celebrate Leicester City's Premier League title!

The Brucciani family have been serving coffee and cakes to the people of Leicester since 1937.

The photo is a bit before my time but fascinating all the same. Who remembers Bruccianis? 🍨

Here's a view along Fox Lane, just off Humberstone Gate, taken on 31st August 1965.

To the right we have the back entrance to Lewis's and to the left the back of Marks & Spencer, which looks like it's in the middle of construction.

A lot of you will remember this branch of Brucciani won't you? Ice cream soda anyone?

There's lot's of pedestrians in this photo; what do you think the boys in the bottom right are up to?

There was a Rag Week stunt (1981?) which involved custard pies being thrown at a lecturer. I seem to remember a distinct sense of humour failure and the university being closed for a few days as a result!

What funny things did you do for charity when you studied with us?

to the construction of our Engineering Building and its famous roof 🏗

Officially opened in 1963, our Engineering Building had to be carefully designed to ensure sunlight wouldn't affect delicate equipment. The rippling ‘waves’ of the two large glass roofs, angled at 45 degrees to the towers, face north to provide illumination without direct sunlight.

You can find out more about this building on our website: https://le.ac.uk/engineering/about/building

1980s cars in Leicester. My pride and joy was a metallic green Ford Es**rt Estate…

Fredric Lennard and his five sons Samuel, Thomas, Henry, John and William built up a large shoemaking business in Leicester. In August 1901 they patented the Liberty brand of footwear. Here is their factory that was on Eastern Boulevard with the famous Statue of Liberty replica which was installed after the family took a trip to America after World War II.

We think this photo was taken in the early 1980s looking at the cars - the orange one looks like a Vauxhall Chevette, what do you think?
