Shetland's fishing association has demanded immediate action after a Norwegian trawler was able to land more than half of Shetland’s annual saithe quota in one trip.

The SFA is calling for urgent government action to curb the growing scale of Norwegian fishing activity in UK waters after a single Norwegian trawler landed more than half the islands’ entire annual North Sea saithe quota in one trip. UHI Shetland has welcomed the award of funding through the Scottish Government’s Marine Fund Scotland of £387,000 for a Hybrid Training Boat, and a further £73,827.97 towards the improvement of ling stock assessment.

“The Scottish Government’s landing target is regressive in that regard, a policy that threatens to turn the clock back to a time when Shetland fishing crews were forced to take the price that they were given, and the profit from their own labour was not theirs to keep.”
