This week, students from Runshaw’s Medical Society enjoyed an immersive experience at Lancaster University.

They attended Biomedicine and Medicine Masterclasses designed to provide a hands-on insight into the world of medical science, learning in the university’s state-of-the-art laboratories and exploring the science behind tropical diseases, focusing on leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis. Students also had the opportunity to experience the impressive facilities firsthand, taking part in OSCE-style activities that included interpreting ECGs and practising effective CPR techniques.

A huge thank you to Jamie Carbert and the team at Lancaster University for delivering such an inspiring session, our students gained an invaluable experience into both biomedical science and medical practice.

Our A Level Chemistry students visited Manchester Metropolitan University to gain hands-on experience in undergraduate laboratories, where they successfully synthesised aspirin and analysed their products using infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques.

This exciting opportunity allowed students to develop practical laboratory skills, deepen their understanding of organic synthesis and analytical methods, and gain insight into university-level study.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Ryan Mewis and the Manchester Metropolitan University Chemistry team for their support, expertise, and for providing such an engaging and valuable experience.

Runshaw College has taken a further step in delivering its Strategic Plan by providing all staff with access to Microsoft Copilot Pro.

This is not about introducing technology for its own sake. It is a deliberate investment in enabling staff to focus on what matters most: high quality teaching, strong support for learners and improved curriculum outcomes.

A key priority within the current Strategic Plan is to further develop the effective use of artificial intelligence. The roll-out of Copilot Pro is a practical step in achieving that ambition, supporting purposeful, ethical and impactful use of AI. It is already helping to streamline routine activity and strengthen the focus on work that directly benefits learners. The development also supports the College’s forward priorities to embed appropriate and responsible use of technology to enhance quality and professional practice across the organisation.

This investment contributes directly to the College’s wider ambitions to be a Great Place to Work and a Great Place to Study, ensuring that colleagues have the tools, support and environment required to perform at their best.

Clare Russell, Principal and Chief Executive, said:

“At Runshaw College, we are clear that exceptional education is enabled by the conditions we create for our staff. Providing access to Copilot Pro for all colleagues is a practical expression of that commitment.

This is about supporting our staff to focus their time and expertise where it matters most. By strengthening capacity and capability, we can continue to enhance quality and deliver the best possible experience for our learners.

We will continue to develop our use of artificial intelligence in a way that is thoughtful, ethical and aligned to our public responsibilities, with a clear focus on improving practice and outcomes across the College.”

Our students aspiring to study veterinary medicine recently visited the Lancashire Farm Education Centre to gain valuable insight into the management and operation of a modern dairy farm.

The experience provided students with an excellent opportunity to see the practical application of science and technology within modern farming and offered valuable insight into careers within veterinary medicine and animal management. Once again we would like to thank the Lancashire Farm Education Centre for such an informative and engaging visit.
