πŸ‘‰ A Day in the Life of a Software Developer
πŸ‘‰ Guest Speaker: Lawrence Wheeldon
πŸ‘‰ Company: Fluent Money
πŸ‘‰ Sector: Finance and Business Services
πŸ‘‰ Audience: Level 1 and Level 2 ICT students

🀩 A massive thank you πŸ™ to Lawrence for giving our learners some invaluable insights into his job as a software developer and coder.

🀩 We learned SO much:

-his route to work
-what his organisation does
-what his daily work entails and the coding languages he uses
-timeframes, deadlines and time management
-who he works with and what his team members do
-the AGILE and KANBAN work processes they use to organise work flow and productivity
-their peer review system to ensure that code is correct and tickets have been properly actioned
-some of the typical problem-solving scenarios he comes up against in his daily work and how he overcomes them.

🀩 Big takeaways: it's all about communication and teamwork. AND, "you will never know everything. There is always more to learn" because this is a young science.

πŸ‘‰ Many young people have preconceived ideas about what programmers do and think that they work alone without the need to form part of a wider team. What Lawrence taught us today is that, whilst many programmers work remotely, they are in constant communication with their team to respond to tickets, peer review each other's work, fix bugs and use their collective knowledge and experience to get the job done!

πŸ‘‰ Step into Hospitality Programme

πŸ‘‰ Level 2 Customer Service students in partnership with Leonardo Hotels

πŸ‘‰ We are delighted to announce a partnership with Leonardo Hotels in Liverpool, designed to give our Customer Service students industry insights into the world of and the opportunity to transform their knowledge into practical training and experience. The partnership will run until May and our students will be guaranteed an interview with Leonardo at the end.

πŸ‘‰ Before Christmas, our students got the chance to visit their beautiful hotel on the iconic waterfront and get first-hand experience of a range of back-of-house job roles.

πŸ‘‰ They developed an understanding of the importance of time management , organisation, teamwork, efficiency and health and safety when it comes to ensuring that rooms are cleaned and made ready for guests in a timely manner in accordance with Leonardo's protocols and procedures.

πŸ‘‰ The next phase of the programme is based at Greenbank's own conference and hospitality complex: the Kinsella Suite. Here, students will be using their knowledge of Leonardo's housekeeping practices and applying it to the four double en-suite rooms that we have.

πŸ‘‰ Our students have already conducted a site visit and appraised the facilities, and started to learn about COSHH...so watch this space for more updates!

πŸ‘‰ A massive thanks πŸ™ to Denise for her time and insights, and to our tutor Rachael for supervising the programme at Greenbank.

πŸ‘‰ Work Experience Programme

πŸ‘‰ Cohort: Entry 2 and Entry 3 Foundation

🦁 Host employer: Knowsley Safari

πŸ‘‰ We are delighted to share the news that 12 of our foundation students have started a 5-week Work Skills Programme in partnership with Knowsley Safari Park.

πŸ‘‰Although they loved feeding the meerkats, it’s not just animal roles at Knowsley Safari Park! Our students will learn about different career pathways within the zoological sector, but will also get the chance to discover and try job roles in maintenance, catering & hospitality, gardening, education and research.

πŸ‘‰ Over the 5-week programme, students will gain practical skills that can be transferred to multiple industries, experiencing new activities which aim to build their confidence, communication and teamwork skills.

πŸ‘‰ Learners will keep a portfolio on the skills gained and they will be awarded a certificate of achievement at the end of the 5 weeks.

🀩Providing immersive experiences early on in a young person's career journey can have an incredibly positive impact on their understanding of the labour market and how they fit into it. It raises their aspirations of what is possible and gives them the chance to develop valuable skills for life, learning and employment.

πŸ‘‰ WOW Project

🀩 We are excited to tell you about an amazing new creative collaboration which brings together Liverpool John Moores University and our Entry 2 Foundation and Level 1 ICT students.

πŸ‘‰ Our students have been invited to participate in a bespoke programme to create digital artwork, animations, comic strips, mini games and sculptures for the PRISM online academic journal and blog.

πŸ‘‰ As part of this project, our learners visited LJMU and presented their creations to lecturers and took questions.

πŸ‘‰ Our students stepped outside their comfort zone by presenting and speaking in public, smashing our termly career theme of 'Communication' πŸ₯‡ and developing their confidence and resilience.

πŸ‘‰ A massive thanks to πŸ™ Dr Craig Hammond for masterminding the project and giving this opportunity to our students. Thanks also to our amazing tutors for supervising and coordinating the individual creative projects in college.
