A summer internship in Philadelphia gave Law student Katie Ledwith a unique insight into the US justice system. 🇺🇸

During six weeks interning with Judge Wendy Beetlestone, Chancellor of the University of Liverpool and Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Katie gained first-hand experience of working within a US District Court.

From drafting legal opinions, conducting legal research and helping to prepare sentencing reports to observing plea hearings, jury selections, constitutional hearings and sentencings, Katie gained valuable experience across a wide range of legal work.

Beyond developing her legal knowledge and confidence, the internship encouraged Katie to think more internationally about her future career and strengthened her ambition to pursue a career in law. 👏

From supporting young asylum seekers today to honouring the experiences of Hungarian refugee students who arrived in Liverpool in 1957, our Justice Garden Project reflects the University of Liverpool's longstanding tradition of offering refuge and opportunity to those displaced by conflict. 🌿

Last month, we celebrated another successful year of the Justice Garden Project and unveiled a commemorative plaque recognising eleven Hungarian refugee students who arrived in the UK after fleeing conflict and persecution during the Hungarian Revolution. The plaque honours their courage and the fulfilling lives and careers they went on to build in Liverpool.

🌼 The Justice Garden Project supports young asylum seekers through gardening, learning and community-building activities. This year, 30 young people took part in the programme, which is delivered in partnership with The City of Liverpool College and is now integrated into the young people's curriculum. It provides a welcoming space for wellbeing and connection while helping to address social isolation.

It was particularly special to welcome Liverpool School of Medicine alumnus Dr Andrew Zsigmond, one of the original Hungarian refugee students honoured by the plaque. He shared words of encouragement and hope with the young people taking part in the project.

Led by Professor Helen Stalford and delivered by community gardener Sioned Edwards (Pontytwr) the Justice Garden has benefited from the financial support of the P&A Garden Centre, The Social Brokers, The Tin Shed and the University of Liverpool Gardening Team. 💚

📍Strasbourg, France 🇫🇷

Some of our Law students recently travelled to Strasbourg for a five-day study trip, gaining first-hand insight into the work of major European institutions and exploring career opportunities in international law, human rights and diplomacy.

During the visit, students met with legal experts and policymakers at organisations including the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights, helping them develop a greater understanding of how legal principles are applied in practice. ⚖️

For LLB Law with Politics student Sabrina Baptista, the trip was an invaluable experience that broadened her understanding of European legal institutions, strengthened her confidence and reinforced her interest in pursuing a career in international human rights.

It's July, which means it's almost time to celebrate our Law, Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology Class of 2026 at graduation! 🎓

Ninety-one years ago, Dame Rose Heilbron graduated from the University of Liverpool with an LLB. One of the first women to achieve a First Class law degree from the University, she went on to complete an LLM in 1937 and enjoy an extraordinary legal career as a barrister and later a High Court Judge, achieving a series of historic firsts.

These included becoming the first woman to win a scholarship to Gray's Inn, one of the first two women to be appointed King's Counsel (silk), the first woman to lead in an English murder trial, the first woman Recorder, the first woman judge to sit at the Old Bailey and the first woman Treasurer of Gray's Inn. 👏

⭐ Dame Rose Heilbron's story is just one example of the many remarkable achievements of Liverpool graduates. We can't wait to see what our new graduates go on to achieve, whatever paths they choose.
