What would you learn, if you could study anything just for the pleasure of it?

The University of Liverpool’s new Continuing Education programme is now open for booking.

You don’t need to be working towards a degree, and you don’t need recent qualifications. Our short courses are open to anyone with an interest in learning something new.

This autumn, you could explore the rise of the Gothic, learn to write poetry or screenplays, discover the worlds of Ancient Greece and Egypt, delve into British art, investigate the French Revolution, learn how to win an argument, begin coding in Python, or spend ten weeks developing your own creative writing. There are courses in literature, history, art, philosophy, psychology, social justice, science and much more.

Courses range from single Saturday sessions to short series and ten-week classes, with both daytime and evening options, and a mixture of courses taught on campus and online.

Come to university for the conversation, the ideas, the people you’ll meet – and the sheer enjoyment of learning something new.

Our new programme is available now. Browse the courses and find something that catches your imagination: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/continuing-education/choose-your-course/

You’re never too old, too busy, or too far removed from education to get curious again.

Earlier this month, we celebrated the graduation of Dr Claire Jones, who completed her PhD in linguistics in the Department of English at the University of Liverpool.

Claire’s university journey began with Go Higher in 2014. She went on to complete a BA and an MRes before undertaking doctoral research in pragmatics and forensic linguistics. Here, she reflects on the course that started it all:

"My academic journey at the University of Liverpool began with Go Higher, a decision that changed the trajectory of my life. Before joining the course, I never could have imagined I would one day complete postgraduate research. It all started with signing up for what would become an ambitious and rewarding 10 years.

"The course provided far more than an academic foundation. It gave me the skills, resilience, and self-belief to continue my studies and overcome challenges. Hurdles and hiccups (part of everyday life) were supported by the amazing dedication of the staff who I simply cannot praise enough.

"Since finishing Go Higher in 2015, I completed my BA, MRes and a PhD in pragmatics and forensic linguistics. My journey has taken me as far as South Africa, speaking at conferences and presenting my research. I have taught undergraduates, attended summer school, conversed with magistrates, studied disciplines beyond my degree and much more.

"This course literally changed my life. Changed my career. It opens up a new world. Do not sit and think university is not for you. Everyone can succeed. Your journey starts at Go Higher just like mine did, so grasp it!"

There is still one week left to apply for Go Higher and begin studying this September.

Go Higher is the University of Liverpool’s one-year, part-time access programme in the humanities and social sciences. It is designed for adults who would like to study for a degree but do not currently have the traditional qualifications required for university entry.

Students study a range of subjects while developing the writing, research, critical-thinking and study skills needed for undergraduate work. The programme offers a supportive introduction to university study and can provide a route into a wide range of degree programmes.

For many former students, Go Higher has marked the beginning of a profound change in their lives:

“Go Higher changed my life. It made me confident and allowed me to successfully complete a degree, which is something I never thought a person like me would be able to achieve.”
— Class of 2022, now studying for a Masters degree

“The path I can trace from Go Higher to my current position cannot be overstated in importance.”
— Member of the Class of 2009, now a course leader in further education

“It was the best thing I ever did.”
— Class of 2016, who went on to complete a Research Master’s and PhD

You do not need to have followed a conventional route through education, and you do not need to have your entire future planned. Go Higher is a place to discover what you are capable of and where university study might take you.

Applications close at 12 noon on Wednesday 5 August, for the programme beginning in September.
