Richard Benjamin gained a BA (Hons) degree in Community and Race Relations at Edge Hill College and completed an MA and PhD in Archaeology at the University of Liverpool. He was also a Visiting Research Scholar at the W.E.B.DuBois Institute of African and African American Research, Harvard University.
With over 15 years of practical museum experience, holding the role of Head of the International Slavery Museum, Dr. Benjamin was part of National Museums Liverpool (NML) from 2006 to 2021.
Following that, he was seconded as a Visiting Professor of Slavery and Public Engagement from 2021 to 2023 in the School of Histories, Languages and Cultures before joining full-time role as a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Museum Practice.
Currently, he is the Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of International Slavery, a research partnership between the University and NML.
