Buffet on a Wing: The Pursuit of Instability, Inaugural Lecture with Professor Sebastian Timme from the University of Liverpool at the Everyman Theatre last week.

This was a free lecture, and our students and staff were keen to check it out! Look at the amazing content:

‘What causes an aircraft to suddenly shake when flying at high speed, and how can engineers prevent it? Answering questions like these has been the driving force behind the speaker’s research career.

In this inaugural lecture, the speaker shares the story of a lifelong fascination with the movement of air and the challenges of understanding one of nature’s most complex and unpredictable behaviours. Using striking visualisations and real-world examples, the talk explores how seemingly small disturbances in airflow can grow to affect an entire aircraft.’

Students even had a photo on the stage with Sebastian!

Our KS4 Go Further Online lessons are in full swing. On a Monday evening Dave is working on some top grade Physics in his Physics GCSE Masterclass and on a Tuesday evening Dan is working on some challenging maths problem solving. Our first STEM Saturday of the year was for year 7-9 students focussing on Engineering. We also supported year 13 students from across the region and beyond with ESAT entrance exam preparation.

The engineering activities included a talk about engineering linked to pipe systems from Dr Rob Lindsay from the University of Manchester, a biomimicry structural strength task from Headteacher Dan, a material strength testing session from our Head of Physics, Aurora, using chocolate and a coding activity to drive a moon rover from our computer science teachers Steve and Tracy.

Overall an amazing day, and the pupils were enthusiastic and full of questions.

Olly from Just Content Content joined us last week to update our professional photographs and start videography for a new set of videos showing what we do in our Sixth Form.

As always Olly had a great time, and fhis included having a go on a year 13 Computer science coursework VR game! He also was enjoying the debate in our lunchtime club.

Beamline For Schools Winners 2026
Here are our amazing Mobile MIP team with their trophy. The team has to present a research proposal for an experiment using beamtime on a Beamline, either CERN, DESY or ELSA. MIP means Minimum Ionising Particle detectors. The plan was to place these before and after a row of recycled phones and then a signal can be calibrated in the phones when electrons or cosmic rays are passing through. Essentially a particle detector in your phone!

The team won a place from 712 global entries, and were given two weeks of beamtime at DESY in Hamburg to complete their proposal, they did this in the summer. We have much more to share on their time in Hamburg.

The trophy is made from recycled wood and metal parts from CERN, reflecting their strong commitment to sustainability. The ring is actually a piece of a real superconducting magnet from CERN, sliced specifically to be used in the trophy.

Thank you to the teams at DESY DESY , CERN CERN, Beamline for Schools, our Head of Physics, Aurora, Professor Sergey Burdin from the University of Liverpool and our previous headteacher Damian for all the support for this project.

Amazing achievement, and they now have research papers to write about their findings!
