In our last 'academic enrichment' lesson on speaker was Laura Jones from University of Liverpool School of Computer Science and Informatics department. Laura gave a talk on her work with robotics simulators.

University of Liverpool Maths School students got to hear about the use of robots in the science industry, particularly when working with chemicals and how to train a robotic arm to handle real-world errors in ex*****on. Some students got to join in with a range of demonstrations where they tested traditional programming methods against efficient learning methods to train our resident robot (Harry!) through a range of tasks. We're were fortunate to be invited back the following week to see some of Laura's work up close 🤖

Dr Steve Garnett visited school recently to catch up with staff and students. The Garnett family support means we can work with schools and students around the Liverpool City Region in our outreach for those who would benefit the most. It also ensures all our students can fully participate in school life.

We were able to share the clear impact of the Garnett Family’s donation, as well as sharing a variety of successes and experiences for our students. This included four of our Garnett Scholars’ amazing global CERN competition win. Their prize is to work on a beamline in Hamburg at DESY for two weeks during the summer, completing their muon experiments they successfully pitched!

Many thanks again to the Garnett Family for all they do to support us.

Some of our Y12 girls have took part in the The Brilliant Club Computer Science Scholars programme last term, working with UCL PHD student Marta learning about MRI Scanning technologies. A great programme with students getting to see real world applications of computer science and maths.

Another Sports Day completed, year 13 proudly represented their houses in the most challenging sporting disciplines. Well done to all who took part, Chisholm Young retained their trophy having won this in year 12 too.

Last term, over the course of two weeks, 14 Year 12 students have been taking part in a new cyber security capture the flag quest using the new IDE platform. In groups working against the clock they decoded encrypted messages and investigated coded security systems. The students really enjoyed the challenges and had such a fun time working through the problems together.

Our students are always keen to complete challenges and our curriculum has plenty of opportunity for this.

Before the break year 12 had a wellbeing day, and some went to Arcains for the afternoon. Lots of games, old and new, and for all lots of nostalgia!

Global Competition Winners!
Our team has made us so proud. 712 entries from 89 countries across the world, 5 winners get to complete their proposed experiment at one of the world’s largest collaborative experimental laboratories.

Our team, the Mobile MIPs, were one of the winners and now have a two week all expenses paid visit to DESY in Hamburg to complete their experiment!

“Our team plans to test if the CMOS sensors in mobile phones can be used as a low-cost beam telescope using the electron beam at DESY,” explain our team. “The CMOS sensors have a projected comparable resolution to current particle detectors and will later be used to study cosmic rays. We are delighted and honoured to be invited to DESY.”

We love being a part of the {u}-maths network. Jeremy is our Careers Lead across the network and did a deep dive on our provision, to help see what we do to share good practice and advice areas we could develop further from his knowledge of his and other maths schools.

He spoke to staff, parents, students, careers link trustee, our careers advisor and pictures here is our Careers Lead Dave, Jeremy and Yozu COO Paul Davies who is our Enterprise coordinator.

A really useful day. Thanks to all who were involved. We always want to maximise impact in our work.
