Happy International Women’s Day!

Today, we’re reflecting on an incredible week of events at LJMU, all focused on this year’s theme: ‘Accelerate Action.’

At LJMU, we’re committed to driving meaningful change, celebrating achievements, and fostering inclusion across our university community.

Some of the week’s events included:

Strength in Action: Women Redefining Change
Staff, students, and the wider Liverpool community came together for an inspiring event, highlighting the impactful work of women at LJMU. Our fantastic panel included:
✨ Dr Aileen Jones – LJMU Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Engagement and Partnerships
✨ Angela Samata – Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside, TEDx Speaker, and BAFTA-nominated BBC presenter
✨ Professor Laura Serrant CBE – Leadership and inclusion specialist, poet, and BBC Expert Woman

Walking and Talking with Women Researchers
Staff joined LJMU academics for an engaging city walk, stopping at key locations to explore their research in gender equality, sustainability, and social justice.

Here Come the Girls: The Future of Sport and Exercise Sciences
This event, which brought 60 young female pupils to campus, inspired the next generation to pursue careers in sports science—especially fitting as LJMU’s School of Sport and Exercise Sciences celebrates its 50th anniversary!

Calderstones School Programme: Women Redefining Leadership
We also welcomed students from Calderstones School, engaging them in thought-provoking sessions on leadership, engineering, gender equality, and cultural change. The day ended with a powerful Wall of Inspiration activity, where students shared stories of women who inspired them.

Our Chancellor, Nisha Katona MBE, was impressed by the ‘phenomenal’ School of Sport and Exercise Sciences after spending an afternoon with students in various hi-tech facilities used for teaching and research.

🎉 It’s a significant year for the school, celebrating 50 years of sport science, having launched the UK’s first sports science degree in 1975.

🌍 Today, LJMU remains one of the best universities in the world for sport and exercise science – ranking sixth in the world and second in the UK for the subject in the QS World University Rankings 2024.

The visit showcased our students and staff's passion and innovation, from motion capture and heart monitoring demonstrations to discussions on sports injury rehab and gamification of children’s rehabilitation. Our nutrition students also served Nisha a bowl of Scouse from a community cookbook they developed with local groups.

LJMU Drama Day: Celebrating 150 Years of Princes Road Synagogue 🎭

Earlier this month, we hosted a special Drama Day at the Joe H Makin Drama Centre, marking the 150th anniversary of Princes Road Synagogue.

The event featured three outstanding performances by our Drama and Musical Theatre students, captured beautifully by student photographer Fiona Filby.

Attendees enjoyed performances of:
🔹 I Have a Beetle in My Black Box by Fanchon Frolich
🔹 Mr Moonlight by Kim Millar
🔹 One Hope Place – A Love Story, inspired by stories from past pupils of One Hope Place

With over 80 guests in attendance, including former students of Liverpool’s Hebrew School, the event highlighted the power of storytelling in preserving history and heritage.

Congratulations to MA Journalism graduate Andrew Spence, who recently interviewed the Prime Minister—just months after completing his course!

Andrew, now a Local Democracy Reporter for Hull Daily Mail (Reach PLC), has already covered major political stories, including the funeral of former Deputy PM John Prescott, where he reported alongside two former Prime Ministers, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

His journey from LJMU to political journalism has been remarkable. Polly Sharpe, MA Journalism programme leader, said:

"Andrew came to LJMU wanting to go into political journalism—to see him interviewing the Prime Minister so soon after completing the course is fantastic."

LJMU Students Aid World Record Run 🎉

Our Sport Science students, led by Dr Jamie Pugh, monitored the performance of ultrarunner Sophie Power as she set a new world record for the longest distance covered by a woman in two days on a treadmill.

Sophie Power made the achievement at the National Running Show in Birmingham, beating the previous record of 211.49 miles (340 km).

Students Harvey Fortis, Henry Martin, Samanvita Ravikanti, Lawrence Jones, and Martina Rudhun measured Sophie’s physiological condition during the run and also met British Olympic champions Sir Mo Farah and Colin Jackson.
