Due to severe issues we've had with Facebook and this current page during the transition period, we have had to create a new page for UCL Live Music Society and are moving all activity there.

This means this page is no longer in use and there will be no further activity. To stay updated with UCL Live Music Society and our gigs/shows, please visit our new page and give it a like and follow.

This page and all the content on it will still be available for archival purposes, but there will be no further posts from us.

Applications are now open to be in the UCL Live Music Function Band!

Function Band is Live Music’s band used for external events and for gigs at short notice. The band has a setlist of songs ready to perform at a moment's notice. As a member of Function Band, you will also have automatic House Band membership - Live Music’s band used for internal gigs and for external gigs with more notice.

Function Band members will be expected to attend regular rehearsals, attend all gigs where you are needed, spend time individually practising your parts and be there for set up/tear down at gigs Function Band is performing at.

It would also be desirable for you to be in London from the start of September so you can attend rehearsals in advance of gigs in freshers week. To be eligible to apply you must have spent at least one term in the Live Music House Band.

We are accepting applications from the following musicians:
Vocalists
Guitarists
Keys players
Bassists
Drummers
Horn players (No requirement to have been in House Band before)
String players (No requirement to have been in House Band before)

All applications consist of a 60-90 second video of you playing in any style to a backing track or metronome. Guitar, keys, and horn applications also have the added requirement of an improvised solo. The backing track for this solo is given in the application form.

The deadline for applications is August 21st at 23:59. Please send any questions to Sam Lubrano (House and Function Band manager) [email protected]

Applications to have your music on the Bloomsbury Sessions are now open!

https://forms.gle/fMDH7zeoe5DE3Bwx5

The Bloomsbury Sessions is an album of original music produced by the Live Music Society which showcases the songwriting talents across UCL. If your song is selected, you will have your music recorded and mixed for it to then be posted on YouTube and Spotify. Across the recording period, you will have access to session musicians that can take your idea and add to it with their respective instruments.

Applications from both individual songwriters and bands are welcome. If you want your own original song on the album then fill in the form linked above by 2nd May.

Those applications which show promise will then be invited to have a discussion with the production team about your song and recording process ideas as well as to answer any questions you may have. The results of the selection process will be announced to applicants on 9th May.

We will be looking for applications
-That can show clear evidence of the song having been written. The clearer an idea you have about what you want the final product to be the better
-Where, if applicable, you can show how you’ll make use of and direct session musicians

If you have any questions then please message one of the producers,
Sam Lubrano ([email protected])
Charlie Cowan ([email protected])

We are excited to announce the return of the Bloomsbury Sessions! After a three year hiatus due to the pandemic, we will once again be giving the chance to record and release your original music! All styles and genres are welcome, and applications will open next week, so get your music ready! We don't necessarily need completed songs, but we'll need to see evidence of a song in progress. Recording will take place after exams and the release will be in the summer.

There will also likely be opportunities to get involved on the production side, and these will be announced at a later date.

If you have any questions, please ask one of the producers, Charlie Cowan ([email protected]) and Samuel Lubrano ([email protected]).

RHAPSODY 2023 ARRANGER APPLICATIONS

We are now accepting arranger applications for Rhapsody 2023!

Live Music Society’s Rhapsody is one of the biggest shows of artsUCL every year, with a host of fantastic and diverse songs performed in the Bloomsbury Theatre.

The job of the arranger is to score a number from the setlist, either transcribed as originally performed, with additional instrumentation, or entirely rearranged to fit a totally different genre, which will then be performed live in Rhapsody 2023.

You must be confident in music theory and familiar with arrangement software (ideally Musescore as this will be the program used for all show arrangements), however do not be intimidated - we are welcome to applications with varying levels of experience.

The example arrangement submitted must be a complete, finished arrangement (no WIP). All example arrangements must be in some form of playback scorewriter, ideally on Musescore (no DAWs such as Logic or Ableton).

If accepted, you will be given the planned setlist, which gives you some time to have a listen to the songs and let us know your preferences*. You will then be assigned a song after a short interview, with Monday the 15th of August as the planned deadline for submission of arrangements. Please take this timeframe into consideration when applying.

SIGN UP FORM: https://forms.gle/YyH2UBNNqmmWmMZY8

We look forward to your applications! If you have any questions please email [email protected] or contact Christopher Lee (producer), Sam Lubrano, or Oliver Crampton (directors).

Complete this form if you are interested in arranging for Rhapsody 2023 - the final deadline for sign-ups is Sunday 29th May at 23:59. Rhapsody 2022 was only a few months ago but Rhapsody 2023 preparation is well under way.

Rhapsody is Live Music’s biggest production of the year with a huge cast for an over 20 song show hosted in the Bloomsbury Theatre. This is a post to give everyone interested in next year’s show some information about the preliminary timeline and what you can expect.

Arrangers: Apply to arrange the music for one or more of the songs. We will allocate songs on a rolling basis so it’s best to apply early. Applications will be open from the start of April until the end of May.

Musical directors: Apply to manage one or more of the songs. You’ll be in charge of taking the song’s arrangement and turning it into a polished performance. Applications will be open from 19th September to 6th October.

Assistant producers: There will be positions open for a scheduler, publiciser and designer. You will aid the producer and directors in putting on the show. Applications will be open from 26th September to 10th October.

Choreographer, costume and vocal directors: Applications open from 26th September to 17th October.

Casting Auditions: To play in the show you’ll need to audition with all instruments you want to play with. You’ll need to play to a backing track. Vocalists will have song specific callbacks. Auditions will be in person from 13th October to 15th October.

All dates and positions given above are subject to change.
Also, hello to freshers starting in September stalking Live Music’s socials - it would be great to see you play in Rhapsody 2023 so do audition in October.

We’re all looking forward to Rhapsody 2023,

Oliver Crampton - Director ([email protected])
Chris Lee - Producer ([email protected])

- President
- Treasurer
- Welfare Officer
- Secretary

- Social Secretary (x2)
- House Band Director (x2)
- Marketing and Social Media Officer
- Tech Officers (x2)

Nominations are open from now until midday 7th March. Nomination link: https://studentsunionucl.org/election/leadership-race-2022

For what each role entails, take a look at our constitution, which can be downloaded here: https://studentsunionucl.org/clubs-societies/live-music-society

Feel free to message any of the current committee members or the page itself if you have any questions!
A few things to note:
1. Although you can stand for multiple positions, you can only hold one! If you get elected to both, you should email [email protected] explaining which you would like to withdraw from.
2. For roles with two available vacancies (House Band, Social Secretary, Events) you must run individually - and not as a pair!
3. The nomination and voting periods act as “rolling windows”. This means that if you have not held membership for 28 days as of today – you can’t nominate yourself yet; but if you have held membership for 28 days as of the 7th March – you will be able to nominate yourself at this point. In short, if you have held membership for 28 days at any point during the nominations window – you will be able to nominate yourself through the website. If you have not held membership for 28 days at any point during the nomination window, you can request an exception to the 28 day rule. If this is the case, students can email the SU directly, briefly outlining which role they would like to run for, why they would like to run for the role, and why they were not able to purchase membership earlier. The email is [email protected].

We're so proud of how this year's show turned out, and a large majority of that came from our Director and Producer so we hope you appreciate the commitment and responsibility that come with the roles, but also how fun and rewarding the entire process will be.
We're looking forward to reading your applications!
