RDSBL’s Professor Kirk Chang, Mark Tsagas and Marina Narbuntaite presented research at the International Conference on AI and Sustainability, ICASA 2026, hosted by UEL’s School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering.

The conference brought together professors, researchers and scholars from across the world to explore the latest developments in artificial intelligence, sustainable technologies and interdisciplinary solutions to global challenges.

Professor Kirk Chang, a member of the Centre for Work, Organisation and Technology (CWOT), presented research co-authored with RDSBL's Dr Susan Akinwalere examining bias in AI-mediated healthcare work through a socio-technical systems lens. Their work highlights that Responsible AI in healthcare requires more than algorithmic accuracy. It calls for a systems-level approach that considers how organisational structures, clinical practices, professional autonomy, power dynamics and patient interactions can shape algorithmic bias and unequal outcomes.

Marina Narbuntaite and Mark Tsagas also represented RDSBL at ICASA 2026, presenting their paper “Beyond Human Control: Legal and Ethical Challenges of Applying International Humanitarian Law to Autonomous Weapons Systems.” Their research explores the legal and ethical challenges raised by autonomous weapons systems, contributing to important debates around AI governance, accountability and the application of international humanitarian law in the context of emerging technologies.

Congratulations to our colleagues on these excellent presentations, which contribute to important conversations on responsible AI, sustainability, law, healthcare, ethics and the future of technology.

RDSBL PhD Student and member of UEL’s Centre of FinTech, Rizwana Saqib, presented two research papers at FinteQC 2026, the Canadian Conference on FinTech, held in Montréal, Canada. Both papers were accepted for presentation following peer review, reflecting the quality and relevance of the research contributions.

Rizwana’s first paper, “Multi Frequency Price Discovery in Emerging Market Equity Futures: Evidence from Explainable AI and Econometric Modelling,” investigates how information is transmitted between spot and futures markets in emerging economies using the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. The study combines Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) with financial market modelling to identify and interpret the key drivers of price discovery across multiple trading frequencies. By enhancing model transparency and interpretability, the research demonstrates how AI can support more informed analysis of emerging market dynamics.

Her second paper, “Futures Led Price Discovery in Bitcoin Markets: Evidence from Cointegration, Regime Shifts, and Dynamic Transmission Analysis,” employs advanced econometric techniques to examine how information flows between Bitcoin futures and spot markets. Using cointegration analysis, regime shift detection, and dynamic transmission modelling, the research provides new insights into cryptocurrency price formation, market efficiency, and the growing influence of derivatives markets in shaping investor expectations.

The research was conducted in collaboration with Mitra Saeedi from RDSBL and Fahimeh Jafari from UEL’s School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, highlighting UEL’s interdisciplinary research strengths across finance, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.

Presenting two papers at an international conference such as FinteQC 2026 reflects the growing global impact of UEL’s research in financial technology, artificial intelligence, and digital markets.

Congratulations to Rizwana on this significant international research achievement and for representing RDSBL and the Centre of FinTech on the global research stage. 👏👏👏

RDSBL Criminology students recently visited the British Transport Police Fi****ms Unit, gaining first-hand insight into specialist policing, fi****ms training, emergency response, tactical equipment, operational procedures, and the realities of frontline policing.

The visit formed part of H360 (360 Degrees of Hope), UEL’s collaborative youth career pathways and wraparound programme. Students were accompanied by RDSBL's Dr Doirean Wilson, Director of the Academy of Policing & Criminal Justice at UEL, and Dr Colin Burton, Founder of H360 and National Community Reference Group Chair and National Community Reference Lead for the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC).

For students, the visit offered a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world policing practice and explore future career pathways within the criminal justice sector.

Reflecting on the experience, Criminology student Dardan Mustafa shared:
“The trip was great. Very insightful for the fi****ms and it interested me in the roles of the British Transport Police. It was an amazing opportunity overall.”

The visit also marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership between British Transport Police and H360, with BTP becoming a national H360 partner.
