City & Guilds of London Art School The Art School is a small-scale, not-for-profit, specialist higher education provider.

The Art School specialises in the study of contemporary Fine Art, Carving, Art Histories and the Conservation of cultural artefacts and books & paper. Committed to championing hand skills and ‘thinking through making’, the Art School offers intensive post graduate, undergraduate and foundation level courses, with the only BA and MA carving courses available in the UK. Teaching is underpinned by an

emphasis on material understanding, rigorous art historical research, live projects with industry partners and the exploration of traditional skills alongside experimentation and innovation. National Student Survey results indicate high levels of satisfaction and a recent Quality Assurance Agency review highlighted three areas of notable good practice including the distinctive shared staff and student professional practice environment. The Art School has an extensive professional network and has partnered with Tokyo University of the Arts, Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum, Southwark Cathedral, Winsor & Newton, Acme, Michelangelo Foundation and Venice in Peril among others. Its high standards are recognized by the number of foundations and individuals who provide bursaries and scholarships, with circa 40% of students receiving financial support.

Student Spotlight: Natasha Garbawi, MA Fine Art

"Natasha Garbawi is an artist whose practice explores our relationship with systems, both internal and external. With a background in fragrance formulation, often drawing on the natural world to inform her practice. Working intuitively, she primarily uses oils, waxes, charcoal, and glazes to create layered compositions rooted in memory. Reassembling familiar moments into fragmented compositions devoid of a linear perspective or narrative. Through this process, Natasha examines the essence of memory, our attachment to the familiar, and the quiet absurdities embedded within everyday experience."

Student Spotlight: Van Khanh, MA Fine Art

"My work maps the psychological landscape of trauma survivors, using oil paint as a somatic language. Vietnam’s war-ridden history produces a collective nervous system underpinned by a thousand years of colonialism and deep-rooted patriarchy. I find parallels between the marginalization of plants and the perceived victimhood of these survivors. What appears passive or fragile may be adaptive and resistant. I paint the body as a distributed system that absorbs, dissolves and re-roots. Here, the body becomes landscape rather than an isolated form. Rootedness, for me, is not a return to a single origin. It is a living system that can root and re-root endlessly. As a Vietnamese artist living abroad, I want to remain connected to my lineage and ancestral memory without being trapped by inherited trauma. The work does not offer healing as resolution, but stays in the murky limbo between rupture and repair, where the body slowly learns how to resettle."

Student Spotlight: Mark Thompson, MA Carving

"Over the 2 years of my part time MA Carving I have explored different formats materials and imagery. I am now focusing on animals as a subject as I feel very comfortable making them and I am able to create a dialogue with urgent and contemporary concerns revolving around climate change and species survival and extinction. I will always attempt to capture in an expressive way the character and appearance. Inevitability the MA has provided a tremendous practical focus and I have made designs for future work in marble while exploring the way public sculpture can interact and enhance a specific location."

Student Spotlight: Rose Fulbright-Vickers, MA Fine Art

"This painting is in diptych format, which I often use to suggest stories and questions. The title of this piece comes from the interesting etymology of the word ‘Gossip’, which came from ‘God Sib’, meaning a trusted friend. From this, midwives in the 15th and 16th centuries were referred to as Gossips, and eventually through the targeted breaking up of this female tradition and introduction of male doctors to the birthing room, the word is now used derogatively to refer to those, usually women, who indulge in rumours and idle chat."

Student Spotlight: Eve Dobel, MA Fine Art

"My work focuses on self-portraiture and use of the human form to explore the interconnected relationship between the mind and body. Using art as a means of seeking to reclaim agency and consciousness over my physical body. My work plays on my background in both philosophy and dance, combining physical movement and embodiment practice with critical theory of the self. Working primarily with oil paint, I use a fleshy, earth-toned palette, with expressive underpaintings selectively concealed by rendered representational flesh."

Sharing recent work by BA (Hons) Woodcarving & Gilding student Sam Ryan ().

"Inspired by the inscriptions of David Jones, whose work I greatly admire, I created an original alphabet based on his distinctive lettering style. As part of the exercise, each letter was drawn by hand, transferred onto wood, carved, and painted using colours inspired by Jones’s own palette."
