City & Guilds of London Art School The Art School is a small-scale, not-for-profit, specialist higher education provider.

The Art School specialises in the study of contemporary Fine Art, Carving, Art Histories and the Conservation of cultural artefacts and books & paper. Committed to championing hand skills and ‘thinking through making’, the Art School offers intensive post graduate, undergraduate and foundation level courses, with the only BA and MA carving courses available in the UK. Teaching is underpinned by an emphasis on material understanding, rigorous art historical research, live projects with industry partners and the exploration of traditional skills alongside experimentation and innovation. National Student Survey results indicate high levels of satisfaction and a recent Quality Assurance Agency review highlighted three areas of notable good practice including the distinctive shared staff and student professional practice environment. The Art School has an extensive professional network and has partnered with Tokyo University of the Arts, Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum, Southwark Cathedral, Winsor & Newton, Acme, Michelangelo Foundation and Venice in Peril among others. Its high standards are recognized by the number of foundations and individuals who provide bursaries and scholarships, with circa 40% of students receiving financial support.

We are pleased to anounce that BA (Hons) Fine Art alumnus Dexter Landesman-Chung () has been selected for the Painting Prize 2026 exhibition, opening today Wednesday 7 October.

Dexter will exhibit the painting ‘Padfoot, welcome home’ (2025). The prize celebrates outstanding painting by final-year undergraduate artists from art schools and universities across the UK. Dexter’s work will be exhibited alongside works by 11 other shortlisted artists.

Speaking about the work, Dexter said: ‘With every painting I have produced this year, since returning home to the East Midlands, a spirit representing my sense of displacement between city and countryside seems to lurk beneath the surface, creeping from the subconscious into the work. The spirit depicted here is a black greyhound, inspired by a photograph of my friend’s dog, Lulu.’

Highlighting the work of Artist Glass Fellow Alex Stone () as they complete their Fellowship at the Art School.

Our incredible Fellows play a vital role in enriching student learning, offering guidance and expertise, while also developing their own artistic practice within the Art School’s Workshops.

"During my fellowship within the Glass and Casting workshops I have focused on the permeable boundary window spaces hold. In making For those who step through the lace curtain I have worked with glass and lead to condense a window pane, the marks of external graffiti and a net curtain to create a ghostly form of a vertical blind. Kiln forming the window glass to imprint a net curtain that shift in and out of the viewer's sight. Glass microbeads found within road markings have been fused to the surface reflecting light from particular angles and disrupting the works formal qualities.

I would like to thank & for their support and mentorship, fellow fellows & .wasdell and .lasers for supporting my experiments with textures."

Our BA (Hons) Stone Carving students are part of a remarkable international celebration of craftsmanship at the 2026 Homo Faber Biennial in Venice.

Bradley Childs, Eshraq Alabrash, Henry Cattermole, Thomas Hancock, Phoebe Basset, Oliver Cronshaw, Thomas Pullen, Klarissa Katz and George Phillips worked collaboratively to realise Silent Song 1, a stone work created under the creative direction of artist Es Devlin.

Carved from Moleanos limestone, the work translates Devlin’s concept of sound into stone. A sequence of diminishing elliptical forms spirals towards the centre, creating a sense of rhythm and movement that gradually draws into silence.

The work forms part of An Island of Light, where 20 Silent Song artworks are displayed around the cloister walls of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini. Each represents the vibrations of a different bell and has been realised through a different craft by a maker from a different country.

Thank you to Homo Faber, the Michelangelo Foundation and Es Devlin for involving our students in this extraordinary project.

We are thrilled to share our Head of Printmaking Jason Hicklin's exhibition 'Dark River, to the Source of the Thames' with Eames Fine Art ().

Dark River is the fourth body of work produced by walking on the bank of the Thames over the last seven years. From the estuary and the North Sea to its source in the low hills of Gloucestershire, a distance of 232 miles. Dark River is the result of fourteen walks following the river from Greenwich to Thames Head.

The Art School has many vital partnerships with cultural and heritage organisations which enriches our teaching and offers valuable opportunity to our students. We are delighted to announce a new collaboration with Orsoni, the historic Venetian mosaic manufacturer, in support of our new Graduate Diploma Arts: Mosaics.

Orsoni will provide the Art School with a selection of its renowned smalti, richly coloured glass traditionally used in mosaic making, for students to work with during teaching and demonstrations. The collaboration will give students the opportunity to experiment with a broad range of colours and materials as they develop their skills and creative practice.

We are very grateful to Orsoni for their generous support and look forward to developing the collaboration as our new Mosaics department grows.

Huge congratulations to our BA (Hons) Stone Carving students on an extraordinary achievement!

Nine of our talented Art School carvers Bradley Childs, Eshraq Alabrash, Henry Cattermole, Thomas Hancock, Phoebe Basset, Oliver Cronshaw, Thomas Pullen, Klarissa Katz and George Phillips, have joined forces to bring a major collaborative stone work to the world stage at the 2026 Homo Faber Biennial in Venice, working under the creative direction of the renowned artist/designer Es Devlin!

Together, they carved Silent Song 1, a stunning collaborative piece now on display at the magnificent Fondazione Giorgio Cini on San Giorgio Maggiore, inspired by an attempt to capture sound visually and a true testament to their skill, dedication and teamwork.

Silent Song 1 takes its place within An Island of Light, the dazzling fourth edition of the Homo Faber Biennial, curated and creatively directed by Es Devlin.

This year's Biennial is nothing short of spectacular, bringing together over 500 artisans from 70 countries across the globe, with hundreds of works on show throughout the historic buildings and grounds of the Fondazione.

A huge thank you to Homo Faber, the Michelangelo Foundation and Es Devlin for making this incredible opportunity possible: what a moment for our students and our School!
