UKDSU - United Kingdom Deaf Student Union Led by deaf students, for deaf students.

UK Deaf Student Union (UKDSU) is a voluntary organisation with a committee whose members are currently studying at University. We are passionate about higher education and we know about many difficulties deaf people experience in their school, college, and/university. We want to unite d/Deaf students all over the UK and our aim is to teach deaf students about their rights, to give them the confidence and information they need to break down barriers in accessing higher education, and to make sure that these students understand and enjoy their studies. We do not only focus on problems affecting d/Deaf students at University; we want to help students attending Colleges or Sixth Forms as well because they can experience similar problems - especially with the proposed changes to Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) (for students who want to study at University).

The Department of Education has released a consultation on their proposals for major changes to how DSA funds assistive software for Deaf and disabled students in higher education. They are suggesting that paid assistive software will only be available for fewer students in “exceptional circumstances” but this could have dire impacts on Deaf students who depend on assistive software as an alternative when in-person support is unavailable.

The consultation is open until Thursday 18th June so do take action and help us ensure your voice is included in the responses!
We will be offering online forums to discuss this and provide opportunities for students to respond in BSL if preferred. Keep an eye out on our page for information on this!

We were honoured to participate in the first ever BDA Youth Conference at DeafEXPO on Saturday!
Three of our committee members represented our team in a panel discussion with MCs Erin and Jeffrey on the topic ‘Deaf Students in Education: Access, DSA, and Student Union Advocacy’.

We appreciate this opportunity to share our lived experiences and highlight the main challenges posed by a lack of Deaf awareness across universities and the systems designed without proper consideration for Deaf students.
A huge thank you to & for making this happen!
