On 4 November at our Strand campus, we host our first Mentoring Meet-up of the new academic year.

We spoke to several of our alumni volunteers about why they want to give back to the next generation of King’s alumni and students.

We also met the event organisers, who told us why you should attend if you’re just starting out in your career and you need some advice.

Alumni mentors can volunteer to support CV reviews, interview skills practice, or goal-setting and next steps conversations.

Last month, we were delighted to welcome members of The King’s Society to the College Chapel for our second annual King’s Society Lecture and Celebration.

The King’s Society is a group of alumni and supporters who have left legacy gifts to our institution in their wills. This helps us open doors for talented undergraduates and turbo-charges our research to make real-world impact.

The evening featured a welcome by our Vice-Chancellor & President, Professor Sh*tij Kapur, and a moving performance by the Choir of King’s College London.

The highlight was the annual lecture.

This year, Professor Sir Simon Wessely, Emeritus Regius Professor of Psychiatry, shared insights from his distinguished career.

He reflected on the remarkable progress that has been made in mental health research over recent decades.

What if more girls could see a future for themselves in space?

For , we’re spotlighting King’s Distinguished Alumni Award-winner Arabi Karteepan (Mathematics & Physics with Astrophysics & PGCE, 2009), who’s helping make that future feel more accessible.

As Head of Physics at Croydon High School, Arabi founded Astrogazers to open up opportunities for girls interested in space exploration. Its Mission Pegasus aims to make Croydon High School the first girls’ school in the world to launch a satellite into orbit.

That’s why, in 2026, we celebrated Arabi’s work with our STEM accolade.

‘History is almost guaranteed to make us under-estimate future risk. The events that have shaped our sense of what extreme weather can do are not the worst that can happen.’

Dr Tom Matthews, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Geography at King’s College London, is the lead author of an article in the journal, Nature Sustainability.

This argues that historical records of the deadliest storms and heatwaves may be a poor indicator of the scale and impact that future weather disasters could have.

Could genetic risk for PTSD depend on the type of trauma experienced?

New research from King's College London suggests that our risk of developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder may be shaped not only by our genes, but also by the type of trauma we experience.

Looking at data from more than 144,000 people, researchers found that childhood trauma was more strongly linked to PTSD symptoms and genetic factors than trauma experienced in adulthood.

These findings could help researchers better understand PTSD risk and support earlier intervention.

Join us for King’s academic Professor Sheila Singh’s Inaugural Lecture on Wednesday 7 October at our Guy's Campus, London.

A leading brain cancer researcher and paediatric neurosurgeon, Professor Singh first helped identify brain tumour initiating cells. These are treatment-resistant cancer stem cells that can drive tumour recurrence.

Her research explores how these cells evolve and how they could be targeted to develop more effective treatments for brain cancer patients.

The first contestant may have left the Great British Bake Off tent earlier this week, but King’s alum Moyin Odeniran (Political Economy, 2026) is still going strong.

The talented amateur baker is rising to the challenge and through to week three on the ever-popular Channel 4 show.

Moyin started baking with his mum when he was five and, by 14, he’d mastered the tricky art of macaronage! For the uninitiated, this is an essential French baking technique of folding dry ingredients into a meringue to create smooth and flowing macaron batter.

With flavours inspired by his Nigerian heritage, he promises more bakes that are fun and precise. Go Moyin!
