The HAC Band concluded a successful week in Belgium this month, combining public performances, military education and acts of remembrance across Flanders.

Throughout the visit, the band performed a series of free public concerts, including appearances at Zonnebeke, Mons Grand-Place, Talbot House, Château La Lovie and St George’s Memorial Church in Ypres. The performance at Château La Lovie was enjoyed by residents, staff and visitors in the grounds of the historic château, while the concert at St George’s Memorial Church concluded the band’s public programme in one of the most significant British memorial churches on the Western Front.

Alongside its musical programme, the band took part in battlefield studies, visited sites of historical significance including Mons Memorial Museum and the Royal Guild of Saint Sebastian in Bruges, and supported commemorative events at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground and the Menin Gate.

The band would like to thank WO1 Buckell and WO2 Powers 162 Regiment RLC, together with guest euphonium player LCpl Haynes from The Band of The Royal Yeomanry, for their support throughout the annual training exercise. Their assistance and company were greatly appreciated by everyone involved.

The Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres bears the names of more than 54,000 British and Commonwealth servicemen who fell in the Ypres Salient and have no known grave. The HAC Band was proud to provide musical support for the daily Last Post Ceremony beneath the memorial yesterday evening.

As part of the ceremony, while the band provided commemorative music, our newest recruit, Musn Ghanty, laid a wreath on behalf of the Commanding Officer, HAC Regiment - Honourable Artillery Company, in memory of those members of the Regiment who fell during the First World War.

WO1 Buckell and WO2 Powers, representing 162 Regiment RLC, also laid wreaths on behalf of their regiment and the British Red Cross Sussex Branch. Having supported the band throughout the visit as the logistics team, they took the opportunity to pay tribute to those who served before them.

Held every evening at 20:00, the Last Post Ceremony continues an unbroken tradition of remembrance, honouring those whose names are inscribed on the memorial.

Railway Dugouts Burial Ground near Ypres was the setting for this year’s annual commemorative service, where The HAC Band provided musical support.

The service remembered the servicemen buried at the cemetery, reflecting on their sacrifice and ensuring their service continues to be remembered more than a century after the First World War.
At the heart of the ceremony were the stories of twelve Talbotousians - soldiers whose lives were touched by Talbot House - Every man's club during the Great War. Through letters, personal accounts and historical research, each man’s story was brought to life, ensuring that the names engraved on the headstones were remembered not only for how they died, but for how they lived.

One particularly poignant moment saw Talbot House organist Ludo play the historic harmonium for Gunner William Hall, the very instrument he is believed to have heard just moments before his death in 1917. Alongside the Ceremony of Light, the sounding of the Last Post and flowers laid by local children, The HAC Band was privileged to contribute to an evening of remembrance that ensured these stories continue to be told.

What remains is their memory. What endures is their story.

The HAC Band was delighted to return to Talbot House - Every man's club on Thursday, giving a free afternoon concert in the historic garden.

Established in 1915 as an 'Every Man's Club', Talbot House provided soldiers of all ranks with a place of rest and respite away from the front line. More than a century later, it remains a powerful symbol of unity, resilience and community.

The Honourable Artillery Company has a long association with Talbot House, with The HAC Band recorded as performing there in March 1918. Returning to perform in the garden once again made for a particularly meaningful occasion, connecting today's musicians with those who served and performed here during the Great War.

Members of The HAC Band visited The Royal Guild of Saint Sebastian in Bruges on Wednesday, where they were given a tour of one of Belgium’s oldest surviving civic institutions.

Founded in the 14th century, the Guild continues to practise and preserve the ancient sport of longbow archery, and has enjoyed close links with Britain since the exile of King Charles II in Bruges. During his time in the city, Charles II and members of his court became members of the Guild, and raised the First Regiment of Foot Guards in Bruges in 1656. Following the Battle of Waterloo, the regiment became known as today’s Grenadier Guards.

The Honourable Artillery Company (1537) shares a longstanding connection with the Grenadier Guards (1656). As the senior regiment of the British Army, members of The HAC were incorporated into the newly formed First Regiment of Foot Guards, establishing a relationship that continues to this day. The visit therefore provided an opportunity to reflect on a shared military heritage, with Band of the Grenadier Guards veterans serving in The HAC Band also taking time to pay their respects.

During the visit, Director of Music Major Bruce Miller presented the Guild with a commemorative HAC plaque to mark the band’s visit and the enduring links between the two organisations. The occasion also provided an opportunity to present Musn Ruddell and Musn Crozier with their Volunteer Reserves Service Medals (VRSM), recognising their dedicated service as members of the Army Reserve. The HAC Band was pleased to perform in the historic Grand-Place de Mons yesterday. The free afternoon concert featured a varied programme of military favourites, concert works and popular music, enjoyed by local residents and visitors in the heart of the city outside the 15th century Gothic architecture.

Our annual training exercise this week also marks the first overseas engagement for new recruit and tuba player, Musn Ghanty. Musn Ghanty has performed with a range of brass bands, orchestras and wind bands, in addition to a varied commercial music technology and performing career. Having recently joined The HAC Band, he has embraced the opportunity to deploy to Belgium and contribute to the band’s programme of performances and military activities from the outset.

The HAC Band has arrived in Belgium, commencing its annual training exercise with a free public concert at Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady) in Zonnebeke.

Located close to the Passchendaele battlefield, the band performed a varied programme of concert music for local residents and visitors, marking the start of a week of performances, military education and remembrance.

Congratulations to two members of The HAC Band on receiving Bars to their previously awarded Volunteer Reserves Service Medal (VRSM), recognising their continued service with The Band of The Honourable Artillery Company.

In addition to their previous Regular Army service, trombonist CSgt Matt Quick and percussionist CSgt Paine have continued their commitment through the Army Reserve with the HAC. A Bar is awarded for each additional five years of qualifying Reserve service beyond the initial VRSM. This week, presented by HAC Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Eze, CSgt Quick received his first Bar, recognising 15 years of qualifying Reserve service, while CSgt Paine received his second Bar, marking 20 years of qualifying Reserve service.

Congratulations to both on reaching these significant service milestones.

This week, overlooking the iconic views of The Tower of London, The HAC Saxophone Quartet provided a musical backdrop to the HMS President Gunroom Dinner – a traditional, mess dinner hosted for the junior officers of the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) unit based on the River Thames in London.

The guests enjoyed music throughout the evening, including naval melodies, popular tunes and sea shanties, adding to the atmosphere of the occasion.
