You only have until 31 October 2026 to submit research for a special issue of Survey Research Methods (European Survey Research Association). The special issue will focus on the transition away from face-to-face interviewing to self-completion modes of data collection. Contributions are particularly encouraged for papers on data quality and comparability; mixed-mode approaches; operational and cost implications; and representativeness and inclusivity.

View or download the latest data collected in 11 countries as part of our self-completion panel survey (CRONOS-3). Wave 7 of the panel survey primarily featured questions on climate change and the environment, including policy preferences. There were also questions on wealth, power and politics, social status and job opportunities, social interaction and wellbeing, immigration and household income. CRONOS-3 has been administered by the Infra4NextGen and SoGreen projects, funded by EU Science & Innovation 🇪🇺.

Data from Round 12 of our main survey (2025/26) is expected to be published for the first time in January 2027. This is the first round where data is being collected in two modes, with half the sample of respondents answering in-person interviews, and the other half completing online or postal questionnaires. This initial publication of Round 12 data will also include post-stratification weights for all first release countries. This will be particularly important to help address the differences in the sample composition between the different methods of data collection.

New research published by the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology (Oxford Academic (Oxford University Press)) focused on the impact of video interviewing on measurement quality. The article referenced how our survey allowed some countries to conduct video interviews in Round 10 (2020-22) in an effort to stop the spread of Coronavirus. "Analysis of the tenth round of the European Social Survey, where video uptake varied substantially across countries, suggests that video interviews might not be an alternative to in-person interviews for all situations and contexts, but rather for specific ones."

Analysis of data collected from our self-completion panel survey (CRONOS-3) was undertaken for new research published by the Journal of European Public Policy (Taylor & Francis). Daniel Devine (University of Southampton 🇬🇧) and Carmen van Alebeek (University of Amsterdam / Universiteit van Amsterdam 🇳🇱) examined the relationship between political trust and support for taxation on inheritance. “...this study offers a key advantage: political trust is measured prior to the outcome (in ESS10 or ESS11), allowing us to establish temporal ordering between predictors and attitudes towards inheritance taxation.”

The latest wave of our self-completion panel data (CRONOS-3) is now available to view and download. Wave 7 of the panel survey was fielded as part of the SoGreen project funded by EU Science & Innovation 🇪🇺. Questions focused on the environmental lifestyle and carbon footprint of respondents, and policy preferences to help reduce the effects of climate change. There were also questions on wealth, power and politics, social status, social interaction and wellbeing, immigration and household income.

CRONOS-3 Wave 7 was fielded during April and May 2026 in Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Finland, France, Hungary, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom. Panellists were asked to complete each wave online or using paper postal questionnaires.

The special issue will focus on research that assesses the transition to self-completion modes of data collection. Submissions should focus on the implementation of self-completion methods in a single country within a comparative survey, or studies based on national surveys with methodological relevance. Contributions are particularly encouraged for papers on data quality and comparability; mixed-mode approaches; operational and cost implications; and representativeness and inclusivity.

Register to attend our next methods webinar on the current survey landscape with Kristen Olson (University of Nebraska-Lincoln 🇺🇸) from 5-6pm (GMT) on Wednesday 28 October. The webinar will examine shifts in survey methods and survey statistics research from multiple perspectives, including new and emerging data sources and changes among more traditional methods. It will include results from a large-scale analysis of mixed-mode surveys and explore what these new technologies and data sources mean for the future, including implications for survey costs.

New research published by Contemporary Social Science (Taylor & Francis) assessed our survey data to better understand levels of attachment towards Europe. James Dennison (Migration Policy Group 🇧🇪) analysed data from the past four rounds of our survey (2016-24) measuring how emotionally attached respondents feel to the continent. "Large majorities now express attachment to Europe in most European countries, regardless of European Union membership, including in countries where such attachment was recently a minority position."

Watch a recording of a recent webinar about the latest iteration of our self-completion panel survey (CRONOS-3). The event included an overview of the panel design and methodology, and explained how to access and analyse the data. CRONOS-3 fielded 450 questions on the five key areas of the NextGenerationEU recovery plan – Digital, Equal, Green, Healthy and Strong – over five waves in 11 countries during 2024-25.
