The School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) undertakes high quality research in a wide range of areas. This research feeds into our teaching at all levels, helping us to develop very well qualified graduates with opportunities for employment both in many leading industries as well as in research. Both Engineering and Materials are very well established at Queen Mary, with the Materials Department being the first established in the UK.

Every International Day of Women and Girls in Science we like to highlight some of our amazing students and their achievements. Here are some who have featured in recent news stories.

Lorraine Cousteau-Brisset and Rachel Smyth are part of Prof Iskratch's group developing artery-on-chip models and researching cardiovascular disease. They recently demonstrated their research to the British Heart Foundation.

Nicole Kirk, Phoebe Asante, Ekua Buckman and Maryam Mowlana are part of the new Engineers Without Borders society and recently organised The Big Pitch - an event where students from across the UK could present their innovative ideas. We can't wait to see more from this society!

Nicole has also recently won an award for her research into STEM education, and she is a valued Student Ambassador.

Sarah Pedroni won best student presentation at the International Rubber Conference in December. She is a first year PhD student and the latest addition to Prof Busfield's Soft Matter group.

Mia Crowther was a finalist for best early year researcher presentation at the International Conference on Prenatal Diagnosis and Medicine last year. She is working as part of a group understanding how HIV affects preterm birth.

Ruxandra Cocu is an undergraduate student who has received a grant from the Royal Society for her development of wearable artificial lungs.

Kiane Princiss Johnson has just had her undergraduate research paper accepted for publication in the Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine journal.

We were thrilled to welcome musician and animal advocate Will Young, plus reps from Lush and Animal Aid, to see our organ-on-a-chip facilities up close — where researchers are pioneering technologies that will accelerate drug discovery and reduce the use of animals in science.

Huge thanks to Professors Hazel Screen and Martin Knight for showing the science in action through hands-on workshops.

Organ-on-a-chip innovations could revolutionise treatments for cancer, heart, liver and kidney diseases, and much more.

"I am not aware of anyone in the history of the university who has given so selflessly, honourably and enduringly to the Queen Mary cause,” said Prof James Busfield in tribute to Prof John Rose, who is celebrating 70 years at the university and was awarded a fellowship this week.

Congrats to John and Prof Keizo Akutagawa, who was awarded the second fellowship, on their lasting contributions to the Queen Mary University of London engineering community.

Congratulations also to the undergraduate and PhD students graduating this week. We're so proud of your hard work and can't wait to watch your careers unfold.

Today is International Women In Engineering Day, and we're looking back on last week's Women Who Soar event.

Year 12 girls interested in Aerospace Engineering entered a competition to come to Queen Mary for the day and learn more about the subject, including:

💬 A panel discussion with women in the Aerospace industry
🤝 Meeting and talking to Aerospace engineers in industry; PhD, masters and undergraduate students; and academics.
👩🏻‍🏫 Delivering their own presentations to the panel of industry experts, with prizes for the best
🪚 Getting hands-on in the maker space
🌪️ Experiments in the wind and visualisation tunnels

We had such a fun day meeting all these impressive young women and hope our team and guests inspired them to choose a career in Engineering.
