Celebrating Black Excellence in Law! ⚖️

🤝 As part of Black Futures Month, The City Law School hosted Black Excellence in Law 2026, bringing together students, legal professionals and academics to celebrate talent, share experiences and champion greater inclusion in the legal profession.

🗣️ Speakers shared insights from their career journeys, offered advice to aspiring legal professionals and explored the importance of breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for the next generation of Black legal talent.

💜 Speaking to the audience, second-year LLB student Uthmaan Sulaiman shared an important message about defining success on your own terms: “Success is different for everyone, and you need to decide what it means to you.”

🌱 He encouraged fellow students to take things one step at a time, reminding them that “no two journeys look the same”. While it can be easy to compare yourself to others at a large university, he urged students to use comparison as motivation rather than letting it hold them back.

⚖️ Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome The Honourable Justice Datuk Dr Shahnaz Binti Sulaiman, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Malaysia and The City Law School PhD alumna, for a special evening at The City Law School.

🗣️ Justice Datuk Dr Shahnaz shared insights from her remarkable career, spanning legal practice, government, legal policy and the judiciary, as well as her journey from studying law in London to shaping and applying it at the highest levels in Malaysia.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our community to hear about the challenges she has encountered, the lessons she has learned and her advice for building a successful and rewarding legal career. 👏

🎉 Huge congratulations to PhD researcher Charlotte Manson on receiving an Anthony Lester Fellowship from Bard College!

⚖️ The Fellowships honour the memory and legacy of Anthony Lester QC (Lord Lester of Herne Hill), one of Britain’s most distinguished human rights lawyers. The highly competitive Fellowships support practical work in human rights and the rule of law and are administered by Bard College’s Human Rights Project, with support from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, the Sigrid Rausing Trust, the Open Society Foundation and the Lester family.

💭 Through her Lester Fellowship project, Charlotte will focus on the structural barriers to gender-responsive transitional justice in post-Assad Syria. She will work with Syrian feminist lawyers, coalitions and human rights advocates while embedded with the international NGO Gender Justice Practitioner Hub.
