Escapees Matt O'Reilly and Allie Maraqan have done just this, joining legendary studio Industrial Light & Magic this Autumn. Both alumni have now joined the Jedi Academy, Industrial Light & Magic's trainee scheme designed to give graduates a chance to learn from world-class professionals.

🏁 Are you ready to start your game engines?

If you’ve ever wanted to try and make a game yourself, then you’ve probably encountered or considered learning Unreal Engine or Unity, arguably the two most prominent pieces of software used by game developers.

But if you’re a beginner, it can be difficult to know which engine you should choose to start learning. They both come with their own useful features, and minimum system requirements, so taking the time to understand the differences can help you save time and money.

✨ Matt Ward, a Lighting Artist at Playground Games, who’ll be joining us to share his journey from Escape Studios to working on the upcoming Fable, and offer insights into building a career in lighting art.

✨ Michael Neocleous (@[michaelneoart]), a Senior Environment Artist at Lighthouse Games, who’ll be joining us to share insights into his career in games, life after Escape Studios, and working in environment art.

✨ Callum Wylie: 3D Animator and Previs/Postvis Animator, with experience at Framestore, MPC and Blue Zoo, including work on Mufasa: The Lion King.

What does a career in Immersive Media really look like?🤔

For MA Game Art Escapee and Creative Technologist Anna Komitska, it looks like working on gigantic holograms for huge brands like Paramount +, Meta and BOSS, bringing stage visuals to life on Jennifer Lopez's 'Up All Night' international tour and working on a prototype for a fine art installation funded by Immersive Arts UK!

On 21st October at 6:00pm BST, Anna joins our Immersive Media Tutor Dan Shutt who has worked on projects for huge festivals including Glastonbury and Coachella to share what working in this fast-developing field is like – and talk about how to get into it!

On Friday 23rd October at 3:00pm - 3.45pm, hear from Escape Studios Character Creation tutors Aidan Lonergan and Lizzie Thomas on how to bring your favourite games to life.

✏️One-Shot: Experiences of working in the comics industry

On Saturday 24th October at 3:00pm-3:45pm, Escape Studios Deputy Principal Simon Fenton hosts a panel investigating what it takes to build successful careers in the world of comics! Join us to hear from 'Dan and Sam' artist and new Escape Studios Comics and Visual Storytelling Tutor, Oliver Harud, and 'Candles' creator Lyndon White – who is launching an exciting new graphic novel with 'Embers' which is currently live on Kickstarter.

We love to celebrate the success of our creative community, and this time is no different!

Today, we’d like to highlight Roberto Valent, VFX alum and Compositor at Industrial Light & Magic.

“Looking back, studying was a very exciting part of my life, a time when we could challenge ourselves, push our skills further and work towards reaching our potential.”

It’s great to be able to watch his talent shine on the big screen, and he’s worked as a Compositor on some major productions, most recently including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Last House.

What a great example for the next generation of artists!

This September, a group of our postgraduate students had the opportunity to look behind the scenes at a world-leading visual effects and colour grading studio at Time Based Arts in Shoreditch! Organised by our Talent Development Manager Will Hughes, the students were shown around the colourful and creative studio premises by Operations Manager Harry Jones.

Afterwards, they got to hear from 3D Artist Oliver Lèmery and Flame Artist Ria Shroff on how different roles across the studio collaborate on projects for major clients including a recent campaign for Lego, and a Q&A session where students got to chat about career advice and routes into industry.
