IMechE The Design Challenge Competition 2017

The Design Challenge Competition runs every year by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The competition is aimed at 1st Year and 2nd Year engineering students across the country. The ‘Challenge’ varies every year. The 1st Year’s competition took place on 4th April 2017 with the ‘Challenge’ requiring the design of a ‘repeatable vehicle’. The vehicle had to be capable of moving from a starting point on a flat surface to touch a wall placed at right angles to and variable distance from the point. The vehicle had then to return and stop as close as possible to the starting point.

School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering has taken part in the Greater London Region (GLR) event for the past four years. Our students have been building from strength to strength every year and achieved this year their best ever results:

1) Main Challenge event: 2nd and 3rd place
2) Presentation competition: 1st place
3) Poster competition: 1st and 2nd place
4) Peer review: 1st place – this is the design chosen by all participating students

As a result our school has won 1st place in all categories but one.
Congratulation to Kingston University Team.

Exhibition of KU Racing Vehicles at Autosport International 2017 Birmingham NEC Show

From 12th to 15th January 2017, students and staff from School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Kingston University London attended the Autosport International 2017 show held at the Birmingham NEC, UK. Attended by over 70,000 people the show is Europe’s largest indoor motorsport event.
On the Kingston University London stand, the staff and students proudly exhibited the KU Racing vehicles: the Formula Student car, the Ion Horse racing bike and the Caterham racing car. The vehicles attracted a lot of attention from attendees, who were all greatly impressed by the high standard of engineering on display. With attendees including Williams Formula 1 Team Principal, Claire Williams, former Ferrari and Williams Formula 1 race engineer, Rob Smedley and of course, “The Stig”, the event gave the students an excellent opportunity to network with leaders in the automotive industry.
The event also gave the opportunity for the University to promote its suite of Engineering courses, with particular focus in the Automotive BSc and BEng/MEng courses.
