Two remarkable gardens, one shared design legacy.

Join us for our Summer Garden Tour, exploring two impressive gardens created by H. Avray Tipping and his distinctive approach to Arts and Crafts garden design.

At High Glanau Manor, garden historian Helena Gerrish will guide us through Tipping’s final home and the garden she has spent many years researching and restoring, before we continue to Mounton House, where his historic framework has been sensitively restored and reinterpreted by Arne Maynard.

A very warm welcome to our newest Gardening for Beginners students.

Over four days, they’ll be learning the foundations of good gardening with RHS Master of Horticulture Ben Pope, developing their knowledge and practical confidence across everything from soils and plant selection to propagation, pruning and seasonal care.

We hope they enjoy every moment of their time with us and leave feeling inspired to put their new skills into practice in their own gardens.

Two gardens, two very different approaches to garden-making.

Join us for our Spring Garden Tour on 6 May 2027, beginning at the romantic Hanham Court, where strong structure, topiary and architectural interventions meet richly layered planting.

In the afternoon, we’ll head to Special Plants, the garden and nursery of renowned plantswoman Derry Watkins, where Derry will treat us to a topical talk before there is time to explore the garden and nursery.

A rather lovely coincidence in this month’s Gardens Illustrated.

Ashington Manor, which we visited on our recent Autumn Garden Tour, and Mounton House, which we’ll be visiting as part of our Summer Garden Tour 2027, both feature in this month’s issue.

From a garden we’ve just explored to one still to come, it’s wonderful to see both celebrated in its pages.

Is it too soon to give up on box?

After almost 30 years of growing it at Yews Farm, Louise Dowding believes not. During our recent EGS Autumn Garden Tour, she shared the routine that keeps her remarkable sculptural topiary thriving, including the crucial October treatment she considers key to preventing spring damage from box moth caterpillar.
