We’re delighted to welcome Fahira Brodlija as a speaker at the 2026 Brunel Summer Programme on International Arbitration!

Fahira is an Advisor on investment law and dispute resolution with a regional GIZ programme in the Western Balkans, where she advises governments on investment treaty and policy design, dispute prevention and management, and capacity development.

Alongside her advisory work, Fahira lectures at the International University of Sarajevo and teaches internationally, including as a tutor for the CIArb Diploma Programme and lecturer at the Africa Arbitration Academy. She has also been a guest lecturer at universities across Europe, the US, Africa and Asia.

A prolific scholar and speaker on investment law, ISDS reform and international dispute resolution, Fahira has authored more than 50 articles and co-edited three books on international commercial and investment arbitration. She is also the founder of the GEM diversity and mentorship programme, supporting young academics and practitioners in international arbitration.

We are delighted to share a new publication by Dr Solon Solomon, Senior Lecturer at Brunel Law School, published in the “International Review of the Red Cross” by Cambridge University Press.

In his article, “Can we pay it out? Civilians and the compensation of cumulative war trauma in the aftermath of the international climate change litigation,” Dr Solomon explores an important and underexamined question: how can civilians be compensated for cumulative psychological trauma caused by war?

Drawing on recent developments in international climate change litigation, the article considers whether legal approaches developed to address cumulative environmental harm can offer insights into the compensation of cumulative war trauma. It examines questions of causation, attribution and compensation, including harm caused by both States and non-State actors.

We are delighted to welcome Tsegaye Laurendeau as a speaker at the Brunel Summer Programme on International Arbitration 2026!

Tsegaye is a Partner in the London office of Signature Litigation, specialising in international arbitration. He has over 15 years of experience representing corporations, States and State-owned entities in complex commercial and investment treaty arbitrations under the rules of leading institutions, including the ICC, LCIA, ICSID and HKIAC. His practice spans a wide range of sectors, with particular expertise in disputes involving Africa.

Tsegaye is a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration for the 2024–2027 mandate and serves on the P.R.I.M.E. Finance Panel of Experts. He also sits as an arbitrator and is recognised by The Legal 500 UK as a Next Generation Partner for International Arbitration.

We are very much looking forward to hearing Tsegaye’s insights and expertise during the programme this September!

We are delighted to welcome Sir Christopher Vajda KC as a speaker at the Brunel Summer Programme on International Arbitration 2026!

Sir Christopher is a barrister and arbitrator at Monckton Chambers. From 2012 to 2020, he served as the UK Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), where he sat in cases spanning areas including investment treaties, sanctions, competition, energy, banking and tax. Before joining the CJEU, he had an extensive practice at the English Bar, appearing frequently before the CJEU and courts at all levels, including the UK Supreme Court. He was knighted in the 2026 New Year Honours for services to International Law.

As an arbitrator, Sir Christopher has sat in ICC, LCIA and SIAC arbitrations, as well as sports and ad hoc proceedings. He is a member of the SIAC Panel of Arbitrators, the P.R.I.M.E. Finance Panel, and the EU’s panel of persons suitable for appointment as Chairpersons for arbitrations to which the EU is a party. He is also Vice Chair of the London Branch of CIArb and teaches at the College of Europe, King’s College London and the University of Luxembourg.

🎓 Brunel alumnus Muhammad Zaheer Called to the Bar of England and Wales

We are delighted to celebrate the achievement of Muhammad Zaheer, a former Brunel Law School student who was Called to the Bar of England and Wales by the The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn on 23 July 2026.

Muhammad completed his Master of Laws (LLM) at Brunel University of London in 2024, during which he also served as LLM Student Representative, supporting and representing his fellow postgraduate students.

Reflecting on his time at Brunel, Muhammad credits his studies with strengthening his legal knowledge, developing his leadership skills and helping prepare him for the next stage of his professional career.

Congratulations, Muhammad, on this fantastic achievement! We are proud to see our alumni progressing in the legal profession and look forward to following the next chapter of his career.

We are delighted to welcome Siobhan Abraham, Senior Associate in the International Arbitration team at BCLP in London, as a speaker at the 2026 Brunel Summer Programme on International Arbitration.

Siobhan has extensive experience in complex cross-border commercial and treaty arbitrations, including proceedings under LCIA, ICC and ICSID Rules, across a broad range of sectors. She is also experienced in arbitration-related litigation before the English High Court and is a qualified Solicitor Advocate with Higher Rights of Audience.

Earlier in her career, Siobhan was seconded to the LCIA Secretariat’s casework team as counsel, giving her valuable insight into the institutional administration of international arbitrations.

We are delighted to welcome Ania Farren, Partner in the International Arbitration team at BCLP in London, as a speaker at the 2026 Brunel Summer Programme on International Arbitration.

Ania advises states and corporate clients on complex international disputes and matters of public international law, with a particular focus on high-stakes commercial and investment treaty arbitrations. Alongside her work as counsel, she also sits as an arbitrator and is a member of Arbitra, an international organisation of independent arbitrators and mediators.

Ania is Chair of the ICC UK Committee on Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution and has been recognised as a Thought Leader in arbitration by Who’s Who Legal. She is a solicitor of England and Wales with Higher Rights of Audience, studied law at the University of Cambridge, and is fluent in French and Polish.

We look forward to welcoming Ania and hearing her share her experience and insights with our participants this September!

We’re delighted to introduce Dr Velimir Živković, Associate Professor at the University of Warwick School of Law, as a speaker at the 2026 Brunel Summer Programme on International Arbitration.

Previously, he was a Research Fellow with the Berlin/Potsdam Research Group International Rule of Law – Rise or Decline? at Humboldt University of Berlin, and an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Comparative Law in Belgrade. He has also advised on World Bank and Swiss government-supported legal reform projects in Serbia.

He holds a PhD in Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science, an LLM in Commercial Law from the University of Belgrade, and a Magister Juris with Distinction from the University of Oxford, where he received the Clifford Chance Prize.

Velimir’s research and practice span international commercial and investment arbitration, contract law, and the rule of law. Alongside his academic work, he acts as counsel and consultant in commercial, investment and sports arbitration, bringing a valuable blend of scholarly insight and practical experience. At the Summer Programme, he will share his expertise on contemporary issues shaping sports arbitration.
