We are delighted to share a new publication by Dr Ermioni Xanthopoulou, Senior Lecturer at Brunel Law School.

The chapter, entitled “Sanctioning the Facilitation of Irregular Migration: The Kinsa Light at the End of the Overcriminalisation Tunnel”, has been published in the Hart Publishing anthology on ‘Sanctions in the EU Legal Order’ edited by Jacob Öberg, Ester Herlin-Karnell and Maria Bergström which is available online fully Open Access due to very generous funding by The Swedish Network for European Legal Studies.

The publication examines the increasingly topical question of sanctions in European Union law, and their recent roles in the Union’s external relations and the area of EU criminal law.

Dr Claire Corbett, Honorary Reader at Brunel Law School, has contributed comments to a recent To Vima article exploring whether social media may be encouraging dangerous driving behaviours among some young drivers.

The piece draws on Dr Corbett’s earlier research and considers how social media attention and online recognition may add to existing motivations for risky driving.

Congratulations to Dr Solon Solomon, who has recently signed a contract with Hart Publishing for a new book!

The forthcoming book will explore the intersection between global law and the law of evidence, bringing together these two important fields of legal scholarship.

Dr Solomon marked the occasion with Sinéad Moloney, Publisher and General Manager at Hart Publishing.

We wish Dr Solomon every success with the book and look forward to seeing it published!

Dr Francesco De Pascalis, Senior Lecturer in Financial Law at Brunel Law School, has published a new piece in International Banker titled “RisiKo Bancario: The High-Stakes Battle Reshaping Italian Banking.”

The article examines the unprecedented push towards mergers and acquisitions in Italy’s banking sector, as the country’s largest financial institutions pursue expansion amid concerns that failing to grow could leave them vulnerable to acquisition.

Drawing on the idea of RisiKo Bancario - a reference to the classic strategy board game Risk - Dr De Pascalis explores the forces driving this consolidation and asks a crucial question: will the drive towards bigger banks ultimately benefit citizens?

A warm welcome to all our new undergraduate students! 🎓⚖️

Today, Brunel Law School welcomed our new students to campus for UG Welcome Week, with a packed programme masterfully moderated by Dr Yue S. Ang.

Students were welcomed by Prof. Jurgita Malinauskaite, Head of Department, and heard from Meryl Dickinson, Director of Education; Dr Elena Christine Zaccaria, Senior Tutor; Isabella Strafford-Antonio, Senior Social Mobility Adviser at Macfarlanes LLP; Anjali Kemwal, representing Pro Bono; and our Level 4 Module Leaders Dr Tonbara Mordi, Dr Dr Mohammad Nayyeri, Dr Patrizia Hobbs and Dr Sandra Eyakware, as well as Colin Luoma, GE Programme Lead.

The talks were followed by a fair where students could meet colleagues and representatives from across the Law School.

A fantastic way to start the new academic year - we wish all our new students every success as they begin their journey at Brunel Law School! 🌟

We’re happy to invite you to a research seminar with Professor Pedro Pablo Pérez Carbó (Universidad de Los Andes School of Law) who is currently a Visiting Professor at Brunel Law School. The seminar will take place on Monday 21st September at 2.30pm in ELTJ 081.

Professor Pérez Carbó will present his latest research on “Minority Shareholders’ Information Rights and New Technology in Clean Water Companies in Chile: The Case of Aguas Andinas S.A.”

Professor Arad Reisberg will act as chair and discussant.

This seminar is part of the BLS Research Seminar Series.

Dr Hayleigh Bosher has launched a new season of her podcast, Whose Song Is It Anyway?, funded by her British Academy Innovation Fellowship.

Across 12 fun, accessible and bite-sized episodes, Hayleigh explores some of the biggest legal questions shaping the music and creative industries today. 🎶⚖️

Drawing on real-world case studies involving Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, the Spice Girls, RAYE and more, the series tackles everything from sampling and copyright infringement to AI-generated music and deepfakes, as well as wider policy debates around streaming and AI.

Day 5 | Brunel Summer Programme on International Arbitration 2026

And just like that, we reached the fifth and final day of this year’s Summer Programme!

We began with Khrystyna Kostiushko, who explored Fair and Equitable Treatment and the broader landscape of substantive protections in investment arbitration, before Fahira Brodlija guided us through the evolving debate on ISDS reform – where we stand today and what the future may hold.

In the afternoon, Dr Wasiq A. Dar shifted the focus to the Global South, offering fascinating perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing international arbitration practice in India and Southeast Asia.

We then brought an incredible week to a close with remarks from Professor Joshua Castellino, Executive Dean of the College of Arts, Law & Social Sciences, followed by our certificate ceremony. 🎓👏

Five days of learning, debate, practical insight and new connections – bringing together perspectives from across jurisdictions and across the arbitration community.

A huge thank you to all our speakers, participants, hosts and partners who made the 2026 Brunel Summer Programme on International Arbitration such a memorable week.
