Supporting London’s Private Hire Drivers Since 2016
London Paragon College has been supporting London’s Private Hire Driver community since TfL introduced the English Language Requirement in October 2016.
Between October 2016 and September 2021, London Paragon College supported more than 30,000 new and renewing Private Hire Drivers.
During this period, we did not simply provide test preparation.
We trained, assessed and certificated Private Hire Drivers to meet the English Language Requirement.
We also delivered Level 2 BTEC qualifications for Taxi and Private Hire Drivers, and our work within the Private Hire Driver community was featured by the BBC.
From 1 October 2021, when TfL introduced its own in-house assessments together with the new SERU assessment, our role evolved.
Since then, London Paragon College has continued to provide specialist face-to-face training and support for:
• SERU
• Topographical Skills
• English Speaking & Listening
• Computer-based assessment practice
• TfL Private Hire Driver applications
• DBS and medical requirements
• TfL correspondence and application queries
Our greatest strength has always been our personalised, face-to-face service.
Many people who want to become Private Hire Drivers have limited confidence in English. Some have very little experience using computers, and some have never regularly used a computer or even a mouse.
For these applicants, simply being given access to an online course or mock-test website may not be enough.
They need someone sitting beside them.
Someone who can explain the question.
Someone who can show them how to use the computer.
Someone who can identify where they are struggling and help them improve.
That is the type of support London Paragon College has provided for years.
Our tutors provide practical, hands-on training so learners can develop not only the knowledge required for their assessments, but also the confidence to complete them successfully in a computer-based environment.
Much of our growth has come through word-of-mouth recommendations from drivers we have previously trained and supported.
That trust has been built over many years.
