⏰ NEXT WED: This presentation is based on the work for a recent article which uses previously unexploited sources to provide a more detailed picture of the experience of one brigade in this important campaign. This enables a further exploration of the campaign, the fighting experienced, and the methods of the British Liberation Army - as well as the way it has been assessed by historians.

Join us in conversation with Linda Robinson about her new book: Women in Power

Join WIIS UK for a book launch and conversation with award-winning author, journalist and foreign policy expert Linda Robinson. Drawing on stories from leaders across the world, Women in Power: Fighting for Democracy in an Age of Authoritarianism explores how women on the frontlines of politics are defending democracy against rising authoritarianism, disinformation, and political violence.

From Taiwan’s Tsai Ing-wen to Moldova’s Maia Sandu and Barbados’s Mia Mottley, the book highlights how female leaders are responding to some of the defining challenges of our time - from war and democratic backsliding to climate justice and social reform.

WIIS UK Leadership Team member Sofie Pultz will be asking Linda about the connection between attacks on women and attacks on democracy, and what these leaders can teach us about resilience and democratic renewal. We will end the session with an audience Q&A.

⏰ NEXT MONDAY: Join us in celebrating Professor Didier Bigo's groundbreaking research that has fundamentally challenged and expanded the field of international relations. Drawing on the rich traditions of relational sociology — from Norbert Elias and Pierre Bourdieu to Ulrich Beck and Michel Foucault — Didier has brought a bold, interdisciplinary lens to some of the most pressing issues of our time: terrorism and counterterrorism, policing, intelligence, war, conflict, border security, migration, refugees, human rights, and democracy monitoring. He has pushed back against the narrow American political science orthodoxies that long dominated the field, opening international relations up to political sociology, political theory, critical literature, and anthropological methodologies.

The main part of this event is a panel of Didier's former doctoral students who will share how Didier's work inspired their research and highlight his remarkable contribution to critical scholarship and the field of international relations.

Why the transatlantic crisis may be a blessing in disguise?

Prof David V Gioe argues that European countries now have no choice but to hedge against an unreliable . The administration’s unpredictable policies, combined with growing Russian aggression, have forced a long-overdue geopolitical awakening.

According to Prof Gioe, European countries are rapidly scaling up domestic defence manufacturing, friend-shoring supply chains, and increasing defence budgets. Alongside Germany’s commitment to doubling its defence spending, they are also expanding satellite constellations to secure independent imagery and radar coverage.

He points out that is simultaneously building its mobilisation capacity and growing its munitions stockpiles, pursuing greater operational autonomy, and ensuring that its logistics infrastructures can function without US support.

The tragedy is that Europe’s spending is currently driven by a fear of American abandonment rather than making the transatlantic alliance more capable. Funds that should be used to fill ’s urgent gaps is being diverted to buy sovereign self-reliance. If transatlantic trust can eventually be restored, Europe’s heavy investments could ultimately leave the alliance more capable and better balanced than before.

Is Putin's position weakening?

“Every other year, they (the Russians) make gains in May and June. Not this year.” says Professor Michael Clarke. He argues that the Russians are now “losing more than they’re gaining,” citing setbacks in Pokrovsk and Oskil River during what should be the most favourable period for military operations. “On the battlefield, the Russians are going nowhere…They’re getting pushed backwards”.

Despite Russia's large-scale overnight and attack on , Prof Clarke believes is becoming “rather worried” about Russia's position in the war.

According to the Ukraine’s Air Defence Ministry, Ukraine intercepted 88% of projectiles from . Prof Clarke argues that the attacks mark the beginning of what appears to be a summer campaign aimed at terrorising the Ukrainian population, after a similar winter campaign failed to achieve its objective. “It didn't break the spirit of the Ukrainians,” he notes.
