"Gratitude is one of the most overlooked virtues a person can have." 💙

An inspiring reminder from Brunel alumna (PGCE, 1997) and 2026 honorary degree recipient Connie Henry MBE, whose graduation speech encouraged our newest graduates to lead with gratitude, purpose and resilience.

A former international triple jumper, Connie has dedicated her career to creating opportunities for others as the founder of Behind the Brilliance, Track Academy and Sport Gives Back; organisations that are changing lives through community engagement, sport and education.

Thank you, Connie, for sharing your wisdom with the Class of 2026. 🎓

Today is , and we're celebrating the connections that help keep our Brunel community together long after graduation.

Over the past few months, alumni from across the decades have shared their memories as we've marked Brunel's 60th anniversary. We've loved hearing your stories, and today we're sharing some of our favourites.

Kevin Middleton, a student in the 70s, left Brunel all the richer for the experience. Not only did he gain a mathematics degree, but he also met his future wife, learned to ride a horse and discovered that unloading deliveries into the ‘big fridge’ in the Union shop was a perk of the job on hot days.

Dr George Barr, another mathematics graduate from the same era, also got in touch to tell us about one of his most memorable experiences at Brunel, alongside his two graduations (BSc and PhD) and daily scones and coffees in the Senior Common Room:

“In around 1976, John Laurie, who played Private James Frazer in Dad’s Army, gave a remarkable Burns Night performance. He spoke about Robert Burns, explained and read his poetry, and described the traditions of Burns Night. He ended by talking about, and reading poems by, William McGonagall, long regarded as the worst poet in history.”

Thanks to Kevin and George for sharing these wonderful snapshots of Brunel life.

A very special welcome back to alumnus Wayne Holloway-Smith, who returned to Brunel today to perform his poems in celebration of Benjamin Zephaniah.

The day is just one of many exciting events taking place as part of Brunel Creates: Arts Festival, running up until Wednesday 3 June.
