We're delighted to celebrate the recognition of Professor Tania Burchardt and Professor Coretta Phillips, from LSE's Department of Social Policy, who have been elected as Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Their election as Fellows recognises their significant contributions to the social sciences and to public understanding of some of society's most pressing challenges. Professor Burchardt was elected in recognition of her work on inequalities and the welfare state, while Professor Phillips was recognised for her contributions to the fields of race, ethnicity, crime, criminal justice and social policy.

📊 How does diversity shape the way teams work?

Research co-authored by Dr Chiara Orsini, a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Social Policy at LSE, explores how gender balance, language background and group format can influence team performance and whether individuals feel heard.

🌍 Drawing on a real-world classroom experiment, the study finds that the benefits of diversity depend not only on who is in a team, but also on how people work together, whether in small, long-term groups or larger, public-facing collaborations.
