Wimbledon College of Arts Wimbledon College of Arts. University of the Arts London (UAL). Specialising in Acting and Performance Design courses

Wimbledon College of Arts has a long tradition of providing world class teaching in technical arts for theatre, film and television. We believe in a non-hierarchical and inclusive approach to performance. That means we see all elements as equal partners. Whether it be acting, directing, writing or designing. Our courses include acting, costume, production and theatre design. Collaborative performance is a key part of the experience at Wimbledon. We design many of our course projects with that in mind. Students often work in teams to produce theatre, performance and other live events. This reflects working practices within the industry. We want to develop your creativity, technical ability and professionalism. It is these qualities that enable many of our graduates to go on to have successful careers. Our alumni include costume designer Lorna Mugan, production designer Sarah Greenwood and set designers Simon Costin and Soutra Gilmour. Wimbledon College of Arts has well established national and international industry links. These include 2 of the United Kingdom's leading theatres: the National and the Lyric. Many of our staff are practicing professionals in their field. These connections allow students to gain valuable work experience. Our facilities include specialist workshops, studios and an on-site professional theatre. In summer 2020 Wimbledon began a multimillion-pound investment programme to transform the site into a world-leading centre for performance. The main phase of work has now been completed, with the final works to refurbish the library due to finish in early 2023. These improvements will enable us to nurture performance talent of the future.

It started with a banana…and ended in space 🍌

Meet Marina Dopico, a graduate of our BA (Hons) Art Direction and Visual Effects course, whose project 'Chapter 1: Matthew’s First Adventure' imagines the story of Matthew, a monkey with a love for fossils, history and a rather unconventional spaceship.

Inspired by Noel Streatfeild’s 'Ballet Shoes', Marina brings Matthew’s journey to life as his homemade banana-ship is struck by lightning and suddenly becomes real, sending him flying into space…until he encounters a gigantic black hole.

Created using ZBrush and Blender, the project combines character, world-building and visual effects to set the scene for Matthew’s next adventure.

Costume design, but make it mythical 🪄

Meet Tiana Lizzi, a graduate from our BA (Hons) Costume for Theatre and Screen course and the designer behind this 'Costume Design for the Last Unicorn.'

Designed for the moment Lady Amalthea rediscovers her identity as a unicorn, Tiana explores themes of memory, time and transformation through colour, embroidery and silhouette.

Inspired by seashells, medieval paintings and representations of the human form, the skeletal embroidery reflects Amalthea’s transformation and her first experience of mortality, while lilac represents renewal and the memory of first love. 🪻

VR meets thriller 💀

This collaborative project is by our BA (Hons) Art Direction and Visual Effects student Jesse-Phoenix Watson and is called 'The Goonies - The Curse of One Eyed W***y'.

He worked on this project with another student from the course called Rebecca Thompson. They decided to turn 'The Goonies (1985)' into a VR thriller puzzle game.

While Rebecca focused more on the concept designing, Jesse-Phoenix focused on ground plans and tech drawings of the Captain's Cabin as well as 3D modeling and texturing.

Spotlighting the confidence, colour and curiosity of the CanCan dancer ❤️💙

Our BA (Hons) Costume for Theatre and Screen graduate Annabel Cronin designed and made a CanCan dancer costume for her final project, that was featured in the V&A Sound on Stage performance.

Sharing more insight into her design she said, "My costume is inspired by a costume designed by Gerald Scarfe for the 1985 ENO production of Orpheus In The Underworld. I was very inspired by Scarfe's caricature illustration style and use of colour. The asymmetric ruffles seen on the shoulder and outside of the skirt are a nod to Scarfe's illustration style." Fusing modern shapes and bright colour, she produced a classic Victorian CanCan costume using a Victorian corset and a Victorian CanCan skirt full of ruffles.

Showcasing a favela through the artistic lens of 3D design 🇧🇷

This project titled, 'Cluttered beauty' Favela' and created by our BA (Hons) Art Direction and Visual Effects graduate Lizeth Tatiana Rodriguez Mejia is inspired by favelas in Brazil evolved through resident-led construction. Through her work, she sought out to capture the "layered architecture and unique spatial layouts."

Mejia describes this piece as the "art of a cluttered place and beauty born from necessity", she wants this piece to highlight that "these communities see hope and beauty in everything they own and achievement in unplanned settlements."

Ghost meets theatre meets cat 🐱

This project created by our BA (Hons) Art Direction and Visual Effects graduate Adam Fait is called Framing The Tail. It is inspired by T. S. Eliot's poem "Gus: The Theatre Cat" and is a reimagined whimsical animated version of the comedy that follows Beerbohm, the Gielgud Theatre's resident ghost cat, when he discovers that his portrait has gone missing.

Blending playful fiction with theatre history, the film explores memory and the longing to be remembered in a world where even ghosts with whiskers can still take centre stage.
