There is something really rewarding about seeing training land the way it was intended to.
 
We recently delivered the Leading the Frontline programme to the Environment team at Brentwood Borough Council and Rochford District Council, two councils working as one team. The programme covered leadership styles, professional behaviours and what it means to lead effectively at every level of an organisation.
 
What made this particularly special was seeing the team take ownership of their learning. Following the programme, their Organisational Development Facilitator ran a follow-up session to embed those outcomes into their day-to-day ways of working. Together, the team explored what their corporate values — Nurture, Belong, Innovate and Trust — actually look like in practice, and worked through the behaviours that underpin a professional and positive working culture.
 
That is the kind of impact training should have. Not just a day out of the office, but a genuine shift in how a team thinks, communicates and leads.
 
A huge thank you to everyone at Brentwood Borough and Rochford District Council for their energy and commitment, both during the programme and beyond it. It was a pleasure to be part of this journey with you.

Last Tuesday, we were at Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service delivering a Communication Skills session — and it was a brilliant day.
 
Communication in any organisation is about far more than getting a message across. It is about making sure the right people feel informed, involved and confident enough to act. When teams communicate with clarity and purpose, everything else becomes easier. Change feels less daunting, collaboration improves, and people show up differently.
 
For a service like NFRS, where clear communication can genuinely make a difference in high-pressure situations, this isn’t just a professional development exercise. It is an investment in how the whole organisation functions.
 
A huge thank you to everyone at Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service for their energy and engagement throughout the day. It was a real pleasure working with such a committed team.

Anyone who has ever managed a project knows exactly what Eisenhower meant.

You spend days, sometimes weeks, mapping out a plan. Dependencies, timelines, resource allocation, risk registers. You present it to the team, you feel good about it, and then reality arrives. A stakeholder changes the brief. A supplier misses a deadline. A key person goes off sick. The plan you built so carefully starts to look like a relic within the first fortnight.

And yet the teams that planned well are almost always the ones that adapt best. Not because the plan survived, but because the planning process forced them to think clearly about what they were trying to achieve, what could go wrong, and what decisions would need to be made under pressure. When the unexpected happens, they already have the mental map. They just need to redraw the route.

The teams that skip the planning because things always change anyway are the ones who scramble. Every problem feels like a crisis because nothing was anticipated. Every decision takes longer because the priorities were never clear.

Good project management is not about controlling the future. It is about thinking rigorously enough about the future that when it surprises you, you are not starting from zero.

That is the skill. And like most skills, it can be taught, developed and practised.

The job you are doing today will look different in five years. Not because you will have changed jobs, but because the job itself will have changed around you.

The World Economic Forum estimates that 39% of the core skills required in today's roles will be different by 2030. That is not a distant projection. It is happening now, in most organisations, across most industries, whether people are paying attention or not.

The skills that will matter most are not all technical. In fact, the most striking finding from recent research is that emotional intelligence, once dismissed as a vague soft skill, is now one of the most sought-after competencies in the UK job market. Because while AI can process data faster than any human, it cannot build trust, read a room, manage a difficult conversation, or lead people through uncertainty. Those remain distinctly human capabilities, and their value is rising precisely because everything around them is automating.

AI literacy sits alongside it. Not the ability to build AI systems, but the ability to work confidently alongside them. To know when to use them, how to question their outputs, and how to apply human judgement where it matters most. This is quickly becoming a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator.

Adaptability, data literacy and leadership round out the picture. The ability to learn and unlearn fast. The ability to make sense of information and communicate it clearly. And the ability to bring people together, set direction, and create the conditions where others can do their best work.

Every business knows exactly what it costs to hire someone. The job ad spend, the agency fee, the hours spent in interviews. It's all tracked, all approved, all sitting neatly in a budget line somewhere.

Almost no business tracks what it costs when someone leaves.

The real number is far bigger than most people assume. Replacing a mid-level employee typically costs between £30,000 and £60,000 once you account for recruitment, the productivity dip during the notice period, onboarding the replacement, and the months it takes a new hire to reach full effectiveness. For senior or specialist roles, that figure can climb to 150% or even 200% of annual salary.

And that's before you factor in the costs that never make it onto a spreadsheet. The institutional knowledge that walks out the door. The client relationships that have to be rebuilt from scratch. The strain on the colleagues left behind, who absorb the extra workload while a vacancy sits open, and who are now statistically more likely to start looking elsewhere themselves.

The UK's average employee turnover rate currently sits at 35%, meaning more than a third of the workforce changes jobs every single year. Yet retention is still treated as a soft, secondary concern in most organisations, while recruitment gets its own budget, its own metrics, and its own seat at the leadership table.

The maths doesn't support that imbalance. Every employee who stays an extra year is, quite literally, money saved. Every employee who leaves because of poor management, no progression, or a culture that never invested in them, is a cost that was almost entirely avoidable.

Retention isn't a nice to have. It's one of the highest return investments a business can make.

Most people don’t recognise burnout when it’s happening to them. That’s exactly what makes it so dangerous.
 
It doesn’t arrive suddenly. It builds over weeks and months, through small signs that are easy to dismiss, easy to explain away, and easy to mistake for something else entirely. By the time it’s undeniable, most people have been running on empty for a long time.
 
The warning signs that tend to get missed are not the dramatic ones. They’re the subtle shifts. Becoming your most productive just before you collapse, working harder, staying later, taking on more, not because everything is fine, but because the anxiety of slowing down has become unbearable. Stopping caring about the work that used to excite you, not with sadness, but with a flat, quiet indifference that feels almost like calm. Sleeping the full night and waking up just as exhausted as when you went to bed, because the body has stopped being able to recover.
 
These are not personality changes. They are not signs of weakness. They are physiological and psychological responses to sustained, unaddressed pressure. They have names, they are well documented, and they are almost entirely preventable with the right organisational conditions.
 
2 in 5 UK workers are currently at risk. Only 32% of workplaces have any plan to identify or prevent it. That gap is not a personal failing on the part of exhausted employees. It is a structural failure on the part of organisations that have not invested in the tools, training, or culture needed to catch people before they fall.
 
Managers who know the early signs. Teams where people feel safe to say they are struggling. Leaders who go first and model what asking for help actually looks like. These are not expensive interventions. They are what a functioning workplace culture looks like.

Your employees are sitting at their desks worrying about money. Right now. And most organisations have no idea.

Financial wellbeing is the dimension of workplace wellbeing that almost nobody talks about — despite the fact that it affects everything. Focus, attendance, performance, morale, retention. Money stress doesn't clock out when someone arrives at work. It follows them in, sits with them through every meeting, and quietly erodes their ability to do their best.

The numbers are stark. 92% of UK employees experienced financial stress in the past year. 59% say it actively prevents them from performing at their best. 4.2 million working days are lost every year as a direct result. And yet fewer than 6% of employers offer any form of financial wellbeing support.

That gap between the scale of the problem and the organisational response to it is extraordinary. Particularly when you consider that 78% of employees with access to financial wellbeing tools say they contribute more to the business as a result. The return on investment is clear. Most businesses just haven't looked for it.

Financial wellbeing doesn't have to mean complex benefit packages or expensive programmes. It starts with transparency around pay. With managers who are equipped to have sensitive conversations without judgement. With a culture where people don't feel they have to pretend everything is fine when it isn't.

Be honest. When was the last time someone actually sat you down and taught you Excel properly?

For most people, the answer is never. More than half of UK office workers are entirely self-taught. Only 48% have ever received any formal training at all, even though many of them spend most of their working day inside a spreadsheet.

So instead, people learn the way most of us did. Trial and error. A panicked Google search five minutes before a deadline. Copying a formula someone else built without fully understanding why it works. UK office workers ask a colleague for Excel help twice a week on average, and 13% need help daily, not because they're bad at their job, but because nobody ever taught them the tool properly in the first place.

The cost of this is bigger than most people realise. Researchers have compared the mental effort of building a complex spreadsheet to the concentration required for a GP making a diagnosis, yet GPs train for years and most spreadsheet users have had no training at all. It's no surprise that errors creep in, that simple tasks take far longer than they should, and that so many people quietly feel like frauds every time they open a new workbook.

This isn't a personal failing. It's a training gap that almost every workplace has simply never addressed.

Most feedback fails before it's even finished being said.

Not because the person giving it doesn't care, but because of how it's delivered. It arrives too late to matter, gets buried under cushioning, or is so vague nobody knows what to do differently.

The data backs this up. Only 1 in 5 employees get feedback weekly, yet half of managers believe they give it often. That gap is where working relationships quietly break down. Half of all employees never act on feedback they receive, simply because it wasn't specific enough.

Annual reviews don't fix this either. Over 90% of managers are frustrated by the process, and 75% of HR leaders admit it doesn't reflect real contribution.
Good feedback is specific, timely, focused on behaviour not character, and followed up on. It's a habit, not a moment.

65% of people want more feedback than they currently get. The appetite is there. The skill just needs developing.
