🌏 A new academic year means new opportunities to learn beyond the classroom.

As we get ready to welcome our new cohort to the SOAS Politics Department, we’re looking back at one of the many ways our students can engage with politics, development and international affairs in practice.

This March, postgraduate students from Human Rights Law, Global Development, Politics and International Relations, Social and Medical Anthropology, and Heritage Studies spent eight days in Laos, visiting Vientiane and Luang Prabang to explore regional integration and its impact on people and places.

The tour followed the Chinese-financed railway connecting the two cities — offering a fascinating way to explore how infrastructure can reshape economies, politics and power across mainland Southeast Asia.

Along the way, students met scholars, policymakers and practitioners, including experts from the Mekong River Commission and World Bank. They visited the Thanaleng Dry Port and discussed issues including debt, trade, water governance and civic space.

In Luang Prabang, they explored the connections — and tensions — between development, tourism, heritage and the environment, while getting the chance to experience these questions first-hand.

That’s what makes field learning so valuable: taking ideas out of the classroom and encountering the people, places and experiences at the heart of the issues being studied.

As we prepare to welcome our new students, we’re looking forward to another year of new conversations, new perspectives and opportunities to learn around the world. 🌍

Welcome to SOAS — we hope you’re ready for the year ahead!
