St Mary’s University is celebrating an outstanding performance in the 2026 National Student Survey!

Overall, St Mary’s now ranks 13th out of all universities in the UK* climbing 21 places since last year. The University also ranks 2nd in London, climbing two places.

Speaking of the results, St Mary’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Anthony McClaran said, "I am delighted to see the outcomes of this year’s NSS. Our teams here live our values, and through tenacity, creativity and empathy, they deliver an outstanding experience for our students.

“In over 175 years of delivering education for our global community it is heartening to see that our University’s relentless focus on excellence, respect and inclusivity, and approach to higher education with humanity and generosity of spirit, continues to deliver graduates who are ready for work – and confident in their futures.

“I would like to thank our students for their engagement with the survey and their ongoing support for this University. I look forward to seeing many of them at our Strawberry Hill campus for graduation ceremonies next week, where our academic and support teams will join me in celebrating their success.”

Our MBBS students will develop not only strong clinical capabilities, but also the essential human skills that define great healthcare; listening, empathy, and truly understanding their patients.

We are committed to nurturing graduates who demonstrate both academic excellence and a strong foundation of character and values. Because healthcare is more than the delivery of information. It requires thoughtful interpretation, an appreciation of diverse perspectives, and a patient-centred approach to care.

Professor Rakesh Patel presented new evidence in collaboration with Taylor & Francis, during Sense about Science Evidence Week in July. The study highlights how evidence-based education can improve patient safety.

Research by Professor Rakesh Patel (St Mary's University, London, and Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust), published in Medical Teacher, shows that resident doctors are twice as likely to make prescribing errors as other healthcare professionals during their first two years after graduation.

The study found that incorporating personalized, structured, video-enhanced feedback into training significantly reduces these errors, closing the performance gap between novice and experienced prescribers.

The findings demonstrate that this cost-effective, scalable intervention has the potential to improve clinical practice, strengthen medical education, and deliver better patient outcomes.

We are excited that construction of the new Centenary Building, which will be home to the School of Medicine, has moved forward in recent weeks. Designed to support high-quality teaching, the building will offer flexible learning spaces and break out areas.

Founding Dean Prof Sonia Kumar and Senior Project Manager Mark Belton led a tour with the School of Medicine team, where they viewed the progress of the building. Once completed, the purpose-built facilities will include a Teaching Ward, A&E spaces, assisted living teaching areas, an Anatomage Room, a new lecture hall, and a variety of office and group study spaces.

Our Placements team had the pleasure to visit some of the Music Therapy sites in action last week across London and Surrey. IMM is a not-for profit organisation where they bring generations together through creative and innovative music projects and training programmes.

The majority of IMM's music therapy delivery is undertaken by HCPC-registered Music Therapists. They manage complex therapeutic interventions, contribute to multidisciplinary working, undertake clinical assessment and formulation, and deliver evidence-informed interventions across a range of settings and populations.

Our medical students will have the opportunity in their first year, to observe person-centred care, multidisciplinary working, clinical reasoning, safeguarding practice and reflective decision-making in real-world community settings.
Music is a universal language that brings everyone involved in the interventions together from primary school children to older people in care homes who might have dementia and/or adults with learning disabilities.
Through intergeneration music making, the aim is to tackle loneliness, isolation, health inequalities and to improve lives of those living with dementia by creating healthy and resilient communities.
