What does Social Accountability mean at St Mary’s School of Medicine? Today, we brought that question to life at St Mary’s University, London with a roundtable in our Waldegrave Suite.

Prof Sonia Kumar says: “Today the commitment and energy in the room was palpable, everyone is ready to join us as we transform the training of future doctors”

We were joined by an inspiring mix of voices: community members, parents and carers, healthcare practitioners, and charity partners — all coming together to shape a shared vision for meaningful and lasting impact.
Because social accountability isn’t just a concept, it’s a commitment to listen, collaborate, and serve the communities we’re part of.

Social accountability is more than a statement of intent, it’s a commitment to action. At St Mary’s London School of Medicine, our goal is clear, to train doctors who can build trust with the people and communities in which they work.

We are excited to announce that The St Mary’s School of Medicine has appointed Prof Samira Ben Omar as Professor of Inclusive Practice and Lead for Inclusion and Communities.

The School of Medicine opens in September 2026, breaking new ground with its approach to social accountability and community engagement. This new role is pivotal to the School’s commitment in working closely with its local community, health partners and voluntary sector organisations.

Speaking of her appointment, Prof Sonia Kumar said: “We are extremely honoured that Prof Ben Omar will be formally joining the School at this exciting time in our journey. Social accountability is our guiding principle in the School, and Samira brings a unique combination of academic and practitioner skills and experience ensuring we deliver on our mandate to serve local people.”

Prof Ben Omar said, “I am deeply honoured to be joining St Mary’s at this early stage of the School of Medicine’s journey. Our work so far has been grounded in conversations with people and diverse communities. For me, this is a moment to not only imagine ‘what if’, but to act on it, by humanising healthcare and educating future doctors and leaders to lead with curiosity, humility, trust, and a strong sense of purpose and belonging”

Professors Ben Omar and Kumar will be leading a roundtable event later this month with community, academic and health partners to progress the work that has already begun on co-creating a shared social accountability framework. find out more at https://bit.ly/3OJr2OC

It’s stress awareness month and here at St Mary’s, we take great pride in making sure that our students embed health and wellbeing into their daily lives as students.

There are lots of initiatives to get involved with, such as SIMMS wellness, which encourages students to get active and join workshops, seminars and trips. Joining a university sports club can be a great way to integrate into uni life, meet new people, try a new sport or simply stay active.

Key Speaker Spotlight: Designing for Empathy in Medical Education
Professor Angela Kubacki, Professor of Medical Education and Clinical Communication at St Mary’s University, London, will deliver a plenary session as part of the three-day Educating for Empathy in Healthcare course, led by the University of Leicester’s Stoneygate Centre for Empathic Healthcare.

Professor Kubacki says: “Empathy and compassion are at the heart of our clinical & communication skills teaching. Rather than being taught as a standalone concept, empathy will form an integral thread running across all aspects of our curriculum, shaping clinical and communication skills teaching, assessments, and patient interactions.”

Designing for Empathy: From Admissions to Assessment, explores how empathy can be intentionally built into medical education, from selection and curriculum design to assessment, while unpacking the ethical and methodological challenges along the way.
