SOAS Department of Development Studies Development Studies at SOAS began in the 1990s, evolving from a Centre into a full-fledged department by 1995.

The SOAS Department of Development Studies is distinguished by its critical, interdisciplinary approach, regional expertise, and commitment to addressing complex global development challenges through research, teaching, and practical engagement. One of the aspects that makes the Development Studies at SOAS particularly distinctive is its traditional focus on the study of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. It combined strengths from Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, and Geography. Today, the Department comprises 28 full-time academics, over 300 postgraduate students, and a strong undergraduate cohort.
