One of the clearest takeaways from our final Venture Into Investing preview session: understanding EIS and SEIS is about more than knowing the headline tax reliefs.

Jo Bateson and Andrew Constable from Mercer & Hole took us through how the schemes work in practice, from income tax and capital gains relief to loss relief, qualifying conditions and some of the practical pitfalls investors need to be aware of. And for anyone building an angel portfolio, understanding those details can make a meaningful difference to how investments are approached and managed.

It’s exactly the kind of practical knowledge we go into in much greater depth through Venture Into Investing, alongside deal sourcing, due diligence, valuation, legal processes, post-investment support and our new module on leading an investment round.

Angel investing doesn’t stop once the investment is made.

That was one of the key themes from today’s Venture into Investing session with Fred Soneya, as we looked at what happens after the cheque is written.

From supporting founders and navigating governance to making follow-on decisions, Fred explored the role angels can play as a company develops, and the importance of knowing when your involvement is genuinely adding value. A big thank you to Fred for sharing his experience so openly, and to everyone who joined us.

This Friday, we move on to EIS and SEIS.

Leading a deal is an important part of angel investing, bringing investors together around an opportunity and helping to take a potential investment through due diligence, negotiation and completion.
