Experienced Worker Assessment, who is it actually for? ⚡

The Experienced Worker Assessment route is for practising electricians who have built competence through years of work, but have not formally completed an apprenticeship or equivalent recognised Level 3 vocational qualification.

For the Installation and Maintenance Electrician route, candidates need at least 5 years’ experience as a practising electrician.

For the Domestic Electrician route, candidates need at least 3 years’ experience as a practising domestic electrician.

This route suits electricians who are currently working in the trade, have enough range in their work to build a workplace portfolio, and can demonstrate their knowledge, practical ability and decision-making against the industry standard.

It is not designed for new entrants, apprentices, or anyone who has completed classroom-based training but has not yet built the required site experience.

At The Electrical Academy, we support the Experienced Worker route through the C&G 2346 Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification, the Experienced Worker Assessment Entry Test where required, and the AM2E assessment.

EAL-recognised fire alarm and emergency lighting courses coming soon ⚡

We’ll soon be offering three new EAL-recognised Level 3 Awards at The Electrical Academy, supporting electricians and contractors who want to develop their knowledge in fire detection, fire alarm systems and emergency lighting.

The upcoming courses are:

Requirements for Fire Detection and Alarm Systems in Dwellings BS 5839-6
EAL 610/1334/1 Level 3 Award
Focused on domestic fire detection and alarm systems, including legislation, fire risk assessments, design, installation, commissioning, certification and maintenance.

Requirements for Fire Detection and Alarm Systems for Buildings BS 5839-1:2025
EAL 610/5638/8 Level 3 Award
Covering fire detection and fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises, including design, installation, commissioning, handover, maintenance and user responsibilities.

Design, Installation and Maintenance of Emergency Lighting
EAL 610/6121/9 Level 3 Award
Covering the application of BS 5266-1, including the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of emergency lighting systems.

These courses are a valuable addition for those looking to expand into safety-critical areas of electrical work where understanding the relevant standards is essential.

A huge congratulations to Alfie and Jason, our first ever apprentice cohort, who have now completed their apprenticeships after four and a half years of training, site experience and commitment.

They’ve received their certificates, and to mark the achievement they were also presented with tool bags, screws and practical kit to support them as they continue their careers in the trade.

A big thank you to Nathan from Orbix and Adam from Eyre and Elliston for providing the gifts and helping us recognise the work Alfie and Jason have put in over the last few years.

For The Electrical Academy, this is a very special moment. Seeing our first apprentice cohort complete the full journey is something we’re incredibly proud of, and we’re excited to see what Alfie and Jason go on to achieve next.

A proud night at the Kent Apprenticeship Awards ⚡

Last week, the Kent Apprenticeship Awards brought together apprentices, employers, training providers and apprenticeship champions from across the county, celebrating the people helping to build Kent’s future workforce.

We’re very proud to share that two of our apprentices, Mason Barnes and Leon Cole, were named winners on the night!

A huge well done to Mason, Leon, Ronnie and Freddie for reaching the finals. To have four apprentices from The Electrical Academy recognised at this level is a brilliant achievement, and a credit to the work they have put in throughout their apprenticeships.

Thank you as well to their employers for the support they continue to give as these apprentices develop their skills in the trade.

Our new C&G 2365 Level 2 Electrical Installation evening group starts on Tuesday 23rd June. ⚡

This is a recognised starting point for anyone new to the electrical industry, covering the foundations needed to begin building a career in the trade, including health and safety, electrical theory, electrical science, communication and practical installation skills.

The course will run for 18 weeks, every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6pm to 8:30pm, making it a structured option for those looking to train around work or other commitments.

1 space left, C&G 2391-52 Inspection & Testing ⚡

There is now 1 space remaining on our next City & Guilds 2391-52 Level 3 Award in Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations, starting 22nd June 2026.

This course is for practising electricians looking to develop their knowledge and practical skills in initial verification and periodic inspection, including inspection and testing techniques, certificates and reports, and understanding results and measurements.

The course runs for 6 days, starting at 9am, with assessment through practical tasks, visual inspection, an online multiple-choice test and a written short-answer paper.

When experienced electricians return to training, the challenge is often showing site knowledge in the format a recognised qualification expects. You may know the work from years on the tools, but assessment asks for clear reasoning, accurate documentation, current standards and the ability to explain decisions in a structured way.

A useful way to approach it:

1. Use your site experience.
When something on the course relates to work you already carry out, connect it to real jobs you’ve done. It helps make the training more practical and easier to apply.

2. Focus on what has changed.
Regulations, technology, paperwork and assessment expectations develop over time. Returning to training gives you the chance to update your knowledge and check how current requirements apply to the work you do.

3. Practise applying the knowledge.
Reading notes can help, but training is most useful when you can explain a process, work through a result, or apply a regulation to a real situation.

4. Understand the assessment early.
Assessments have their own format, knowing what will be expected helps you prepare in a more focused way.

Solar PV training at The Electrical Academy ☀️

With the hot weather this week, it’s a timely reminder of how important renewable technologies are becoming within the electrical industry.

This week, Mark has been delivering our C&G 2922-34 Solar Photovoltaic Systems course, supporting electricians who want to develop their knowledge of solar PV installation and maintenance.

Solar work requires a clear understanding of the system, safe installation methods, and the standards that apply. As demand for renewable technologies continues to grow, this qualification helps electricians add a valuable skill set to the work they can offer.

Proud to see our apprentices representing The Electrical Academy at SkillELECTRIC 2026 ⚡

Yesterday, some of our apprentices took part in the SkillELECTRIC National Heats, putting their skills to the test alongside electrotechnical students and apprentices from across the UK.

SkillELECTRIC is the UK’s premier electrical installation skills competition, organised by NET in partnership with WorldSkills UK, giving young people in the trade the chance to demonstrate their ability in a professional competition environment.

Taking part takes preparation, focus and strong practical standards, from planning and installation through to safe working and attention to detail. We’re very proud of our apprentices for stepping up, representing the Academy, and challenging themselves in a national competition.
