The next chapter starts here.

Today’s graduates were once prospective students wondering whether university was within reach.

Across our scholarship programme, support turns ambition into achievement.

As this year’s ceremonies concluded, we celebrated what philanthropy has made possible, including 1,000 First Generation Scholarships awarded.

But the need remains. Talented students still face barriers to higher education and the opportunities it can create.

From scholar to supporter.

We’re delighted to welcome back alumnus Wahab, who is sharing his story with graduating students today.

A former scholarship recipient, he first gave back to the University in 2024 and continues to stay actively involved as an alumni volunteer and advocate for education and the next generation.

His journey shows how the impact of philanthropy extends beyond graduation, creating opportunities for future generations.

During his time at Manchester Met, Filmmaking graduate Baka Bah has used the power of storytelling to create opportunities for communities and young people across Greater Manchester.🎓

Last year, Baka received £2,000 in funding through Manchester Met’s 200-year anniversary Rise Programme to develop a community-focused project. The funding enabled him to produce The Success of Moss Side, a documentary celebrating the area’s rich culture, creativity and community spirit.

SNE Studios, the Manchester-based creative production company he founded, has also worked with students at St Peter’s High School. Through this project, Baka helped young people develop practical skills and industry experience.

Congratulations to Master of Sport Directorship graduate Khalida Popal, a football pioneer and campaigner who achieved her graduation dream while continuing her global fight for greater equality and inclusion for women in sport.

As former captain and founding member of the Afghanistan women's national team, she has become one of the most influential voices in global football, campaigning for gender equality, inclusion and opportunities for refugee communities.

Reflecting on this milestone, Khalida said: “It’s like scoring the winning goal at the last minute after a long journey. I’m looking forward to celebrating because it’s taken a long time, but I deserve to be happy and celebrate. It was the best goal of my life”.

1,000 First Generation Scholarships. One shared commitment to opportunity.

As we celebrate this year’s graduates, we’re also marking a major milestone: 1,000 First Generation Scholarships awarded.

We’re proud to see our largest-ever cohort of First Generation scholars graduate this summer, including masters graduate, scholar and ambassador Elle-Sue.

Her journey reflects what this programme is about: talent, determination and opportunity made possible through philanthropy.

Over the past 10 years, donor support has helped 1,000 first-generation students thrive at Manchester Met and achieve their ambitions.
