The University of Manchester Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health We develop and deliver the highest quality education and training for health professionals and life scientists in partnership with the NHS and industry.

The Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health was formed in 2016 by bringing together the Faculty of Life Sciences and the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences. We develop and deliver the highest quality education and training for health professionals and life scientists in partnership with the NHS and industry, contributing to the University's tradition of innovation and improvements in the health of people around the world. We are the largest supplier of healthcare graduates to the NHS in the north-west of England, producing highly-trained and skilled professionals who are increasingly sought-after by employers across the health industry. We also conduct outstanding, world-leading research in the biological, medical and health sciences across eight research themes and take our social responsibility to make a contribution to the 'greater good' seriously.

Mental Health research is changing lives. Here’s 6 projects that we think you should know about this

Manchester is co-leading new research into pregnancy, birth and early postnatal mental health, helping develop more equitable support for women and families.

CareLoop uses real-time symptom monitoring to help identify early warning signs and support more personalised care for people living with severe mental illness.

research shows how feeling connected to school, building positive relationships and having a sense of belonging can support young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

Through partnerships in India, digital training, mental health assessment and self-harm surveillance are helping strengthen care and su***de prevention.

Research is helping improve access to culturally informed psychological support for Black, Asian and other minoritised communities in the UK and globally.

A clinical trial is exploring whether cognitive analytic therapy could provide better support for young people who experience self-harm.

Team Womb has been awarded the NIHR Impact Prize for their life-saving work on screening womb cancer for Lynch syndrome.

The research group is based at the University of Manchester and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, led by Emma Davidson, Professor of Gynaecological Oncology.

National implementation of universal screening of womb cancer patients for Lynch syndrome identifies an estimated 1,000 people each year in the UK alone.

These people can now access preventative cancer care, such as regular colonoscopies and risk-reducing surgery.

What is Lynch syndrome?
Lynch syndrome is a hereditary condition that increases the risk of several cancers, affecting approximately 1 in 300 people in the UK but most people are unaware of their diagnosis. 

Why is this important?
This research showed which patients with womb cancer should be tested for Lynch syndrome, how they should be tested, that women want to be tested to protect their family members, and that testing everyone is cost-effective for the NHS.

This led directly to a change in NICE guidance: that all women with womb cancer be offered testing for Lynch syndrome. These recommendations have been endorsed by international groups.
