This is a post by Melissa Keogh. PhD student in FSE and (spoiler alert) WINNER of the UoM 3MT Competition 2017... This year I took part in the Three Minute Thesis Competition. Coming to the end of my PhD I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to re-focus on and remember what my PhD is actually about. After sign-up, competitors were invited to attend a research communication training session. [ 800 more words ]

The University of Manchester recently hosted a Standing up for Science media workshop for early career researchers, led by the charity Sense about Science. This was part of their Voice of Young Science initiative, which aims to empower early career researchers to play an active role in discussions about science with the public and the media. The panellists for the day included a mixture of journalists, and scientists with experience in media communications, who gave us an insight into the process behind presenting science in the media, and advice on how we can utilise the different media channels to promote science effectively. This is a guest post by Prabhuraj Balakrishnan. PhD student in FSE and Young Chemical Engineer of the year 2017. It was thrilling to be selected as Young Chemical Engineer of the year 2017 by the prestigious IChemE (Institute of Chemical Engineers), IMech (Institute of Mechanical Engineers) and IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology). The award was made to me based on my research (graphene for fuel cells), teaching and outreaching activities. [ 356 more words ]

John is a PhD student in the School of Chemical Engineering & Analytical Sciences... What are you working on now? For me, nano-materials are fascinating because of how the properties of a material can dramatically change as they start to get really small. Take gold as an example; what colour is it? Well, at least at the macro-scale at room temperature, it's what you would call gold, or a shade of yellow-orange. [ 289 more words ]

With the Christmas break upon us. Here is some timely advice... Make time for you There can be many pressures on a researcher to work long hours. The need to have papers written or results to present at a conference; deadlines for funding applications. In some research institutions a ‘long hours’ culture can develop, where researchers routinely stay on site well beyond their contracted hours. [ 387 more words ]
