Set to open in early 2015, the £61m National Graphene Institute being built by BAM will see The University of Manchester scientists and commercial partners working side by side on future applications using the wonder material. Isolated at The University of Manchester in 2004, graphene has captured the attention of scientists worldwide with its potential to revolutionise the materials world due to
its incredible properties. As the world’s first 2D material, it is ultra-light, yet immensely tough; it is 200 times stronger than steel, but is incredibly flexible; and it is fire retardant yet retains heat. When it opens the new facility will provide 7,800m² of accommodation over five levels which will include highly serviced ultra-high-spec cleanrooms and research laboratories, as well as more conventional offices, social and seminar space. The project is jointly funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Council (£38m) and European Regional Development Fund (£23m). For more information visit:
